DTC Descriptor
DTC C0277
- Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The brake pedal switch provides a high side discrete input to the instrument panel cluster (IPC).

Conditions for Running the DTC

Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The brake pedal switch input to the IPC does not become active when vehicle conditions indicate it should be.
* The brake pedal switch input to the IPC is active when vehicle conditions indicate it should not be.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The current DTC clears when the fault is no longer present.

Special Tools

Circuit/System Verification

1. Verify proper adjustment of the brake pedal switch assembly. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment (Adjustments).
2. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Brake Pedal Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the brake pedal. The reading should change between Applied and Released.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake pedal switch.
2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 3 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the ignition circuit fuse is open, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground.

3. Verify the scan tool Brake Pedal Switch parameter is Released.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.

4. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 1 and the ignition circuit terminal 3. Verify the scan tool Brake Pedal Switch parameter is Applied.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the brake pedal switch assembly.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.

* Stop Lamp Switch Replacement (Service and Repair)
* Control Module References (Programming and Relearning)for IPC replacement, Programming, and setup.
