Front Differential Carrier Cleaning and Inspection

Special Tools

J 35405 Differential Preload Wrench




1. Install the differential assembly to the transaxle case.




2. Clean the matching surfaces of the transaxle case and transaxle housing.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

3. Install the transaxle housing to the transaxle case with the bolts. Refer to Transmission General Specifications (Transmission General Specifications) for bolt length.

* Bolts 1 and 2 to 29 Nm (22 lb ft)
* Bolts 3 and 4 to 22 Nm (16 lb ft)
* Bolt 5 to 10 Nm (89 lb in)




4. Using J 35405 (1), turn the differential assembly right and left 2 or 3 times to allow the bearing to settle.
5. Using J 35405 and a torque wrench, measure the turning torque of the differential.

Standard turning torque at 60 rpm - 0.20-0.69 Nm (1.8-6.1 lb in)

6. If the turning torque is not within the specified value, refer to Transmission General Specifications (Transmission General Specifications) for standard flange thickness A.




7. Remove the bolts (1-18) and the transaxle housing.




8. Remove the differential assembly.




9. Using a dial indicator, inspect the backlash of the side gear.

Standard backlash - 0.05-0.20 mm (0.0020-0.0079 in)

10. Refer to Transmission General Specifications (Transmission General Specifications).
