Drive/Propeller Shaft: Service and Repair

Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the left and right exhaust mufflers.
3. Mark the relationship of the propeller shaft (2) to the pinion gear flange (3).
4. Place a stand under the propeller shaft near the support bearing to support the propeller shaft.
5. Remove the pinon flange coupling bolts (4).

6. Mark the position of the center bearing bracket in 4 places.
7. Remove the center bearing support bolts.
8. Slide the propeller shaft forward to disengage the differential pinon support pin.
9. Remove the sliding yoke and the 2-piece propeller shaft assembly from the transmission.
10. Inspect the shaft for dents or other damage. Replace, if the propeller shaft is damaged.
11. Inspect the universal joint for smooth pivoting. If the universal joint binds or appears tight, replace the propeller shaft.

12. Inspect the sliding yoke for the following:
^ Scoring
^ Burrs
^ Other damage
If the sliding yoke surface appears scored or rough, replace the sliding yoke.
13. Inspect the sliding yoke splines (1) for excessive wear or damage. If the splines appear worn or rounded, replace the sliding yoke.

14. Inspect the pinion gear flange (1) for the following conditions:
^ Cracks
^ Distortion
^ Other damage
If the Pinon flange appears damaged or distorted, replace the pinon flange.
15. Inspect the pinon support pin for distortion or other damage. If the pinon support pin is damaged, replace the differential assembly.
16. Inspect the rubber couplings for tears, cracking, or other damage. If the rubber coupling is damaged, replace the coupling.

Installation Procedure

1. Lubricate the sliding yoke with transmission lubricant.
2. Install the sliding yoke to the transmission with the propeller shaft.
3. Place the center of the propeller shaft on an adjustable stand to support the propeller shaft.
4. Lubricate the pinion support pin with molybdenum disulfide grease, or equivalent.
5. Align the marks on the pinon flange and the propeller shaft (1) and install the propeller shaft.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Install the propeller shaft pinon flange bolts (4).
Using new bolts, tighten the propeller shaft pinon flange bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).

7. Align the center support bearing bracket marks.

8. Install the propeller shaft center bearing mount bolts (2).
^ Tighten the propeller shaft center bearing mount bolts evenly to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the stand from under the propeller shaft.
10. Install the left and right exhaust mufflers.
11. Lower the vehicle.
