Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
3. Remove the brake pipe (2) from the wheel cylinder (1).





4. Remove the brake shoes (17, 29). Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
5. Remove the bolts (8) from the wheel cylinder.
6. Remove the wheel cylinder (14).
7. Remove the parking brake cable from the backing plate (11).
8. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Rear.





9. Remove the backing plate (2).

Installation Procedure





1. Install the backing plate (1).





2. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Rear.
3. Install the parking brake cable to the backing plate (11).
4. Install the wheel cylinder (14).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the bolts (8) to the wheel cylinder.

^ Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

6. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.





7. Install the brake pipe (2) to the wheel cylinder (1).

^ Tighten the brake pipe nut to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).

8. Adjust the rear brake assembly. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
9. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
10. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
11. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
