Gearshift and Select Shaft Assembly Replacement

Disassembly Procedure






1. Remove the 4 bolts from the gearshift guide case (2).
2. Keep the retaining clamp (1) and the engine wiring harness bracket (3).
3. Remove the gearshift guide case from the transaxle.
4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Place a drain pan under the transaxle.






6. Remove the transaxle oil filler plug (1) from the transaxle.
7. Drain the transaxle oil.






8. Remove the following from the left case:
^ The 3 bolts (1)
^ The left case cover (2)
^ The O-ring






9. Remove the gearshift yoke bolt (2) from the gearshift yoke (3).
10. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.
11. Lower the vehicle.






12. Remove the interlock bolt (2) and the washer from the left case.
13. Remove the gearshift and select shaft (1).






14. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer in order to remove the roll pin of reverse interlock shaft from the gearshift and the select shaft (1).
15. Remove the 5th and reverse gearshift cam (2) from the gearshift and select shaft.






16. Remove the return spring of the 5th and reverse cam guide from the gearshift and the select shaft.






17. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer in order to remove the roll pin of the gearshift cam guide from the gearshift and the select shaft.
18. Remove the 5th and reverse gearshift cam guide from the gearshift and select shaft.






19. Remove the following components from the gearshift and select shaft:
^ The select spring guide
^ The reverse select spring

20. Remove the washer and the 1 C-clamp from the gearshift and from the select shaft.






21. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer in order to remove the following components from the gearshift and select shaft:
^ The inner roll pin of the 5th and reverse gearshift cam
^ The outer roll pin of the 5th and reverse gearshift cam






22. Remove the following components from the gearshift and select shaft:
^ The interlock plate
^ The gearshift and select lever






23. Remove the following components from the gearshift and select shaft:
^ The C-clamp
^ The 1 washer
^ The low speed select spring
^ The select spring guide

24. Remove the C-clamp from the gearshift and from the select shaft.
25. Clean all of the components with clean solvent. Dry the components thoroughly.
26. Inspect all parts of the gearshift and select shaft for wear or for damage. Replace the parts, as necessary.

Assembly Procedure






1. Install the C-clip to the gearshift and select shaft.
2. Install the select spring guide and the low speed select spring to the gearshift and select shaft.






3. Install the washer and the C-clip to the gearshift and select shaft.






4. Install the interlock plate and the lever to the gearshift and select shaft.
5. Using a standard drift punch and a hammer, install the roll pins of the 5th and reverse gearshift cam into the gearshift and select shaft






6. Install the C-clip and the washer onto the gearshift and select shaft.
7. Install the reverse select spring and select spring guide onto the gearshift and select shaft.






8. Install the 5th and reverse gearshift cam guide onto the gearshift and select shaft.
9. Using a standard drift punch and a hammer, install the roll pin of the gearshift cam guide into the gearshift and select shaft






10. Install the return spring of the 5th and reverse cam guide onto the gearshift and select shaft.

Important: When installing the 5th and reverse gearshift cam, wind the return spring 1/2 - 1 turn.






11. Install the 5th and reverse gearshift cam to the gearshift and select shaft.
12. Using a standard drift punch and a hammer, install the roll pin of the reverse interlock shaft to the gearshift and select shaft.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.






13. Install the following items into the left case:
^ The gearshift and select shaft (1)
^ The gearshift interlock bolt (2) and the washer
Tighten the interlock bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).

14. Raise the vehicle.
15. Align the bolt holes of the gearshift and select shaft and of the gearshift yoke.
16. Apply some GM P/N 12345493, or an equivalent, to the threaded portion of the gearshift yoke bolt hole.






17. Install the gearshift yoke bolt (2) into the gearshift yoke (3).
Tighten the gearshift yoke bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
18. Inspect the O-rings of the left case cover for cuts or for damage. Replace the O-rings, as necessary.
19. Install the O-rings to the left case cover.






20. Install the left case cover (2).
Tighten the 3 left case cover bolts (1) to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
21. Apply some GM P/N 12346004, or an equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.






22. After the transaxle has completely drained, install the transaxle drain plug (2).
23. Add 2.4 liters (2.5 quarts) of Castrol Syntorq Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346190, or of an equivalent, into the filler hole (1). The oil level should be even with the bottom of the transaxle plug hole.
24. Apply some GM P/N 12346004, or the equivalent, to the filler plug threads.
25. Install the filler plug into the transaxle.
Tighten the filler plug to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
26. Lower the vehicle.






27. Clean the mating surfaces (4) of the gearshift guide case (3).
28. Apply some GM P/N 12346240, or the equivalent, to the mating surfaces of the gearshift guide case.






29. Install the gearshift guide case (2) to the transaxle.
30. Install the retaining clamp (1) and the engine wiring harness bracket (3) to the gear shift guide case.
Tighten the 4 gearshift guide case bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
