Case: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Place a drain pan or a suitable container under the transaxle.
3. Remove the transaxle oil level and the filler plug (1) from the transaxle.
4. Use a 10-mm hex-head socket or a wrench in order to remove the transaxle drain plug (2) from the transaxle.
5. Remove the engine coolant pipe bolts to the side cover of the transmission.
6. Drain the transaxle oil.
7. Remove the following components from the vehicle:
^ The 5 retaining clips
^ The left splash shield
Notice: If the transaxle side cover is frozen to the left case, tap around the side cover with a rubber mallet until the side cover is free of the left case. DO NOT attempt to pry the side cover away from the left case with metal tools or damage to the left case and side cover mating surfaces could result.
8. Remove the following components from the left case (3):
^ The 8 bolts
^ The 2 studs
^ The transaxle side cover (1)
9. Clean the mating surfaces of the transaxle side cover.
10. Inspect the mating surfaces of the transaxle side cover (2) for damage or for distortion.
11. Replace the transaxle side cover if necessary.
Installation Procedure
1. Apply GM P/N 12346240 or the equivalent to the mating surfaces of the transaxle side cover (2).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the transaxle side cover (1) to the left case (3).
Use the 8 transaxle side cover bolts in order to secure the transaxle side cover.
Tighten the transaxle side cover bolts in a diagonal pattern to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
3. Install the left splash shield to the vehicle.
Use the 5 retaining clips in order to secure the left splash shield.
4. Apply GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to the threaded position of the transaxle drain plug.
5. Install the transaxle drain plug (2) into the transaxle.
Tighten the transaxle drain plug to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
6. Add approximately 2.4 liters (2.5 quarts) of Castrol Syntorq Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346190, or of the equivalent. Add the fluid into the hole for the transaxle oil level and for the filler plug.
The oil level should be even with the bottom of the hole for the transaxle oil level and for the filler plug.
7. Apply GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to the threads of the transaxle oil level and the filler plug.
8. Install the plug for the transaxle oil level and for the filler (1) into the transaxle.
Tighten the plug for the transaxle oil level and for the filler to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the drain pan.
10. Lower the vehicle.
