Valve Body and Accumulators

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Place a drain pan or a suitable container under the transaxle fluid pan.

4. Allow the transaxle to cool, if necessary. After the transaxle has cooled, remove the transaxle drain plug (1) from the transaxle fluid pan (3). Drain the transaxle fluid.
5. Remove the following components from the transaxle:
^ The 13 bolts and the 2 crossed recessed bolts.
^ The transaxle fluid pan guard (2)
^ The fluid pan (3)
^ The fluid pan gasket

6. Disconnect the connectors from the direct clutch (2) and from the second brake solenoid (1).

7. Remove the forward clutch accumulator and the second brake fluid pipes (2) from the lower valve body.
8. Remove the Throttle Valve (TV) cable from the throttle valve cam.

9. Remove 6 bolts (2) and the fluid filter screen from the lower valve body (1).
10. Remove 11 bolts and the valve body from the transaxle.

11. Cover the accumulator bores with a cloth.
Slowly inject low-pressure compressed air into the fluid pressure passage in order to remove the forward clutch (2) and the second brake (1) accumulators.

Installation Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J36850 Transjel Transmission Assembly Lubricant

Notice: Torque sequence and specification is very important to valve body operation. If bolts are tightened at random, valve bores may become distorted and inhibit valve operation. Make sure all parts are thoroughly cleaned and free of damage prior to installation.

Notice: When installing valve body to case, make sure accumulators and springs are in their correct positions and all valve body bolts are installed according to length and position. All bolts should be hand-tightened only. Do not use air powered tools when installing the valve body.

1. Apply J36850 some to the forward clutch and to the second brake accumulator seals.
2. Install the forward clutch and the second brake accumulators in the case bores.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the valve body assembly to the transaxle case, and align the manual valve (2) with the shift lever pin (1). Install the 2 valve body reamer bolts (4,5) and the 9 valve body bolts (6,7,8) in order to retain the assembly.
Follow the diagonal pattern in the figure, and tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
4. Install the fluid filter screen to the lower valve body (1). Install the 6 bolts in order to retain the fluid filter screen.
Tighten the fluid filter screen bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).

5. Install the TV cable to the throttle valve cam (1).
6. Install the pipes to the forward clutch accumulator and to the second brake fluid pipes into the lower valve body. Ensure that the pipes are securely seated.

7. Install the connectors to the direct clutch (2) and to the second brake solenoid (1).
8. Install the new fluid pan gasket, the fluid pan, and the fluid pan guard to the transaxle. Secure the items with 15 bolts. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid/Filter Changing.
Tighten the transaxle fluid pan bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
9. Apply some GM P/N 12346004, or the equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.
10. Install the transaxle drain plug into the transaxle fluid pan.
Tighten the transaxle drain plug to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
11. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle fluid pan.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
14. Refill the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure.
