Shift Cable: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Remove the 6 screws (1,2,3,4,5,6) from the console.
2. Remove the center console from the vehicle.
3. Remove the rear console from the vehicle.
4. Remove the 2 screws and the selector lever knob (1) from the selector lever.
5. Remove the shifter plate. Moving towards the selector knob, disconnect the indicator lamp.
6. Remove the front carpet retainers, and pull back the carpet.
7. Remove the clip and the shift select cable from the bracket.
8. Remove the 1 nut and the shift select cable from the manual shift lever.
9. Remove the 2 bolts from the bulkhead grommet. Remove the shift select cable (3) from the bulkhead at the transaxle side.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install the shift select cable (3) and the grommet through the bulkhead. Secure the cable with 2 bolts.
Tighten the bulkhead grommet bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
2. Connect the shift select cable to the manual shift lever (4). Secure the cable with the 1 nut.
3. Install the shift select cable into the bracket. Secure the cable with the clip.
4. With your hand, adjust the adjustment nut (3) until the nut contacts the joint of the manual shift select cable.
5. Tighten the adjustment nut (1) with an open-end wrench until the nut is firmly against the joint of the manual shift select cable.
6. Route the shift select cable under the carpet to the selector assembly.
7. Fit and reposition the carpet.
8. Install the front carpet retainers, and secure the carpet.
9. Apply some lithium grease GM P/N 1051344 to the clevis pin.
10. Connect the shift select cable to the selector lever. Secure the cable with the clevis pin and with the retainer clip.
11. Install the indicator cover.
12. Install the bulb socket to the cover.
13. Install the console into the vehicle. Secure the console with the 6 screws.
14. Connect the selector lever knob to the selector lever. Secure the knob with the 2 screws.
15. Inspect the shift select cable using the following procedure:
^ With the ignition switch in the OFF position and with the selector lever in the P position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. The vehicle should not move.
^ Verify that the vehicle cannot be driven in the N position.
^ Verify that the vehicle can be driven in the D position, in the 2 position, and in the L position.
^ Verify that the vehicle can reverse in the R position.
16. Install the rear console into the vehicle.
17. Install the center console into the vehicle.
18. Install the 6 screws into the console (1,2,3,4,5,6).
