Wheel Stud Replacement (Hubless Design Without ABS)

Removal Procedure

Caution: If one stud is damaged, replace all the studs. A loose-running wheel may cause only one stud to break, but the other studs could have internal fatigue. Replacing only the broken stud and remounting the wheel may cause further damage and personal injury. If the stud holes in the wheels have become enlarged or distorted, replace the wheel.





1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove the brake drum (6).
4. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the dust cap (11).
5. Unstake the washer (9).
6. Remove the washer and the spindle nut (10).
7. Using a hammer, tap the brake drum in order to loosen the assembly. Remove the drum from the spindle.





8. Use a rod (2) and a hydraulic press (1) in order to remove the wheel stud (3) from the brake drum.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Use care to align splines on stud and brake drum/hub.





1. Use a rod (2) and a hydraulic press (1) in order to install the wheel stud (3) to the brake drum.





2. Install the brake drum (6) to the spindle (2).
3. Install the washer (9) to the spindle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the nut (10) to the spindle.
^ Tighten the nut to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
5. Stake the washer.
6. Install the dust cap.
7. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
8. Lower the vehicle.
