Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to SIR Service Precautions Caution in Service Precautions.




1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
2. Remove the knee bolster.
3. Remove the steering wheel from the column.
4. Loosen the 2 upper steering column mounting bolts.
5. Slightly lower the steering column.
6. Remove the 5 screws from the lower steering column cover (2) in order to remove the upper cover (1) and the lower cover (2).




7. Disconnect the SIR coil and the combination switch electrical connectors (2).
8. Loosen the SIR coil and combination switch electrical harness wire bands (1).




9. Remove the 3 screws in order to remove the SIR coil and the combination switch (2) from the column.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Use the 3 screws in order to install the SIR coil and the combination switch (2) to the column.




2. Connect the SIR coil and the combination switch electrical connectors (2).
3. Secure the harness (2) to the column with the wire bands (1).




4. Install the upper column cover (1) and the lower column cover (2).
5. Secure the column covers with the 5 screws.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Tighten the 2 upper steering column mounting bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the upper steering column mounting bolts to 14 N.m (10 lb ft).

7. Install the knee bolster.
8. Install the lower trim cover to the steering column.
9. Secure the lower trim cover with the 3 screws.
10. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
11. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System.
