Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Place a drain pan beneath the engine oil pan in order to catch escaping engine oil.





4. Remove the following components in order to allow the engine oil to drain:
^ The engine oil pan drain plug (6)
^ The gasket (5)
5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (4) and one bolt.
6. Remove the following components from the vehicle:
^ Fourteen engine oil pan bolts
^ Two nuts
^ The engine oil pan (3)





7. Remove the following components from the cylinder block:
^ The oil pump strainer bracket bolt
^ The oil pump strainer bolt
^ The oil pump strainer (2)
8. Remove the oil pump strainer seal (3).
9. Clean the inside of the engine oil pan and the oil pump strainer screen.
10. Clean the mating surfaces of the engine oil pan and the cylinder block.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install the oil pump strainer (2) with a new oil pump strainer seal (3) to the cylinder block.
Secure the oil pump strainer with the oil pump strainer bolt and then the oil pump strainer bracket bolt.
^ Tighten the oil pump strainer bolt to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
^ Tighten the oil pump strainer bracket bolt to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
^ Apply a continuous bead of GM P/N 12346240 or the equivalent, to the engine oil pan mating surface.





2. Install the engine oil pan (3) to cylinder block.
3. Use two nuts and fourteen bolts in order to secure the engine oil pan (3).
Tighten the engine oil pan nuts and bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
4. Install the crankshaft position sensor (4).
5. Install a new gasket (5) and engine oil drain plug (6).
Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Refill the engine oil to specifications. Refer to Capacities - Approximate Fluid.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
9. Start the engine and inspect the exhaust system for exhaust leaks.
10. Check the oil pressure.
