Brake Drum Replacement (Hubless Design Without ABS)
Removal Procedure- J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
- J 34866 Wheel Hub Remover
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Use a chisel in order to remove the spindle nut dust cap (1).
4. Use a punch in order to unstake the spindle nut (2).
5. Remove the spindle nut (3) and washer (4) from the spindle (5). Discard the spindle nut.
6. Release the park brake.
7. Remove the backing plate plug.
8. Insert a screwdriver into the backing plate plug until it contacts the shoe lever stopper.
9. Push the screwdriver in the direction of the arrow.
10. Use a J 2619-01 and a J 34866 in order to remove the drum.
11. Use two wheel nuts in order to secure the J 34866 to the drum (1).
12. Inspect the brake drum. Replace the drum if necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection.
13. Inspect the brake components. Replace the components if any of the following conditions exist:
- Wear
- Distortion
- Cracks
- Corrosion
Installation Procedure
1. Put a flat screwdriver between the rod and ratchet. Push down on the ratchet in order to maximize lining-to-drum clearance.
2. Move the brake shoe stopper back to its original position.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the drum. Secure the drum with a washer and a new spindle nut.
- Tighten the spindle nut to 80 to 120 Nm (58 to 86.5 ft. lbs.).
4. Stake the spindle nut.
Important: If the spindle nut dust cap is does not fit or is damaged, install a new dust cap.
5. Use a plastic hammer in order to install the spindle nut dust cap. Tap the collar of the dust cap until the collar contacts the brake drum.
6. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Press the brake pedal 3 to 5 times with about 30 kg (66 lb) of pressure to obtain a proper lining-to-drum clearance.
