Gearshift and Select Shaft Assembly - Overhaul

Disassembly Procedure





1. Remove the 4 bolts from the gearshift guide case (2).
2. Set aside the retaining clamp (1) and the engine wiring harness bracket (3).
3. Remove the gearshift guide case from the transaxle.
4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Place a drain pan or another suitable container under the transaxle.





6. Remove the transaxle oil level/filler plug (1) from the transaxle.
7. Remove the transaxle drain plug (2) from the transaxle using a 10-mm hex head socket or wrench.
8. Drain the transaxle oil.





9. Remove the following from the left case:
^ The 3 bolts (1)
^ The left case cover (2)
^ The O-ring





10. Remove the gearshift yoke bolt (2) from the gearshift yoke (3).
11. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.
12. Lower the vehicle.





13. Remove the gearshift interlock bolt (2) and washer from the left case.
14. Remove the gearshift and select shaft assembly (1).





15. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer in order to remove the reverse interlock shaft roll pin from the gearshift and the select shaft (1).
16. Remove the fifth and reverse gearshift cam (2) from the gearshift and the select shaft.





17. Remove the fifth and reverse cam guide return spring from the gearshift and the select shaft.





18. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer to remove the gearshift cam guide roll pin from the gearshift and the select shaft.
19. Remove the fifth and reverse gearshift cam guide from the gearshift and the select shaft.





20. Remove the following components from the gearshift and the select shaft:
^ The select spring guide
^ The reverse select spring
21. Remove one washer and one C-clip from the gearshift and the select shaft.





22. Use a standard drift punch and a hammer in order to remove the following components from the gearshift and the select shaft:
^ The fifth and reverse gearshift cam inner roll pin
^ The fifth and reverse gearshift cam outer roll pin





23. Remove the following components from the gearshift and the select shaft:
^ The gearshift interlock plate
^ The gearshift and select lever





24. Remove the following components from the gearshift and the select shaft:
^ One C-clip
^ One washer
^ The low speed select spring
^ The select spring guide
25. Remove one C-clip from the gearshift and the select shaft.
26. Clean all of the components with clean solvent. Dry the components thoroughly.
27. Inspect all of the gearshift and select shaft parts for excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Assembly Procedure





1. Install one C-clip onto the gearshift and select shaft.
2. Install the select spring guide and the low speed select spring onto the gearshift and select shaft.





3. Install one washer and one C-clip onto the gearshift and select shaft.





4. Install the gearshift interlock plate and gearshift and select lever onto the gearshift and select shaft.
5. Install the fifth and reverse gearshift cam inner and outer roll pins into the gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and a hammer.





6. Install one C-clip and one washer onto the gearshift and select shaft.
7. Install the reverse select spring and select spring guide onto the gearshift and select shaft.





8. Install the fifth and reverse gearshift cam guide onto the gearshift and select shaft.
9. Install the gearshift cam guide roll pin into the gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and a hammer.





10. Install the fifth and reverse cam guide return spring onto the gearshift and select shaft.





Important: When installing the fifth and reverse gearshift cam, load the fifth and reverse cam guide return spring by winding it one-half to one full turn.

11. Install the fifth and reverse gearshift cam onto the gearshift and select shaft.
12. Install the reverse interlock shaft roll pin into the gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and a hammer.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

13. Install the following items into the left case:
^ The gearshift and select shaft assembly (1)
^ The gearshift interlock bolt (2) and washer
Tighten the gearshift interlock bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
14. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Align the gearshift and select shaft assembly bolt hole with the gearshift yoke bolt hole.
16. Apply GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the gearshift yoke bolt hole.





17. Install the gearshift yoke bolt (2) into the gearshift yoke (3).
Tighten the gearshift yoke bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
18. Inspect the left case cover O-rings for cuts or damage. Replace as necessary.
19. Install the left case cover O-rings.





20. Install the left case cover (2).
Tighten 3 left case cover bolts (1) to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
21. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.





22. After the transaxle has completely drained, install the transaxle drain plug (2).
23. Add approximately 2.4 liters (2.5 qts) of Castrol(R) Syntorq Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346190, or the equivalent, into the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole (1). The oil level should be even with the bottom of the transaxle plug hole.
24. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or the equivalent, to the transaxle oil level/filler plug threads.
25. Install the transaxle oil level/filler plug into the transaxle.
Tighten the transaxle oil level/filler plug to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
26. Lower the vehicle.





27. Clean the gearshift guide case (3) mating surfaces (4).
28. Apply GM P/N 12346240, or the equivalent, to the gearshift guide case mating surfaces.





29. Install the gearshift guide case (2) to the transaxle.
30. Install the retaining clamp (1) and the engine wiring harness bracket (3) to the gear shift guide case.
Tighten the 4 gearshift guide case bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
