2. Transaxle Side Case (Right Case)

Removal Procedure
^ Tools Required
^ J 23907 Slide Hammer
^ J 29369-2 Output Shaft Front Bearing Puller





1. Remove one bolt and the speedometer driven gear case from the right case.





2. Use a screwdriver in order to remove the input shaft oil seal (2) from the right case (1).





3. Remove the following items from the right case:
^ Two bolts (2)
^ The reverse gearshift lever (1)

Important: If the right input shaft bearing remains in the right case upon removal of the gear cluster and the gearshift shaft assembly, remove the right input shaft bearing.

4. Use J 23907 with J 29369-2 in order to remove the right countershaft bearing race from the right case (3).





5. Remove the drain plug/magnet from the left case.





6. Remove the gearshift arm bolt and the gearshift arm from the gearshift shaft:





7. Remove the following components from the right case:
^ The gearshift shaft bolt and the washer (1)
^ The gearshift shaft spring (2)
^ The steel ball (3)





8. Remove the gearshift shaft (3) from the right case (1).





9. Remove the gearshift shaft boot (2) from the case.





10. Remove the gearshift shaft oil seal (1) from the right case (2) .
11. Clean all of the case components and the internal parts thoroughly with solvent.
Dry the components.
12. Inspect all of the components for excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Installation Procedure

^ Tools Required
^ J 36850 Transjel Transmission Assembly Lubricant
^ J 35538 Axle Shaft Seal Installer
^ J 34857 Gearshift Shaft Seal Installer
^ J 34849 Transaxle Shaft Bearing Outer Race Installer
^ J 7079-2 Universal Driver Handle
^ J 34855 Input Shaft Seal Installer





1. Use the J 34857 in order to install the new gearshift shaft oil seal (1) into the right case (2)
2. Apply J 36850 to the new gearshift shaft oil seal lip.

Important: When installing the gearshift shaft boot, make sure that the vent opening in the boot faces downward.





3. Install the gearshift shaft boot (2) onto the right case (1) .
4. Install the gearshift shaft through the gearshift shaft seal and into the right case.





5. Use the J 35538 and a hammer in order to install the new right differential oil seal into the right case.
6. Apply J 36850 to the following components:
^ The new seal lip
^ The steel ball
^ The gearshift shaft spring
7. Install the steel ball and the gearshift shaft spring into the right case.
8. Apply a light coat of Loctite@ pipe sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to the threaded portion of the gearshift shaft bolt.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

9. Install the gearshift shaft bolt with the washer into the right case.
^ Tighten the gearshift shaft bolt to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).





10. Apply Loctite 414 GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threaded portion of the gearshift arm bolt.
11. Install the gearshift arm onto the gearshift shaft. Secure the gearshift arm with the gearshift arm bolt.





^ Tighten the gearshift arm bolt to 36 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

12. Install the drain plug/magnet into the left case in its original position.





13. Use the J 34849 and the J 7079-2 in order to install the right countershaft bearing race into the right case.
14. Apply Loctite 414 GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threaded portion of the two reverse gearshift lever bolts.





15. Install the reverse gearshift lever onto the right case. Secure the reverse gearshift lever with the two bolts. Do not fully tighten the bolts.





16. Install the reverse gear idler shaft temporarily.
Measure the clearance between the reverse gearshift lever and the reverse gear idler shaft case bore.
The reverse gearshift lever clearance should be 5 mm (0.20 inch).
If the reverse gearshift lever clearance is out of specification, loosen the two reverse gearshift lever bolts. Adjust the reverse gearshift lever until the clearance is within specification.
^ Tighten the reverse gearshift lever bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).

17. Use the J 34855 in order to install the input shaft oil seal into the right case.
18. Apply J 36850 to the following components:
^ The input shaft seal lip
^ The speedometer driven gear case O-ring
19. Install the speedometer driven gear case into the right case.
Use the speedometer driven gear case retaining bolt in order to secure the speedometer driven gear case.
^ Tighten the speedometer driven gear case retaining bolt to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
