DTC 38 Left Front EMB Will Not Hold Motor:








CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Current is supplied to the EMB's through terminal "B" of the three way motor pack connector. When a release of the EMB is commanded, the EBCM grounds the EMB input and allows the EMB to be energized to release the motor.

This DTC is designed to detect slipping EMB's during initialization. When the release is commanded during initialization, the EMB is not energized and should hold the motor, resulting in sensed current of the motor being equal to commanded current (motor is at stall). If the motor is moving, sensed current will be less than stall current.

FAILURE CONDITION
DTC A038 can be set during initialization. DTC A086 is always set with A038.

ACTION TAKEN
If an EMB can not hold a motor in the home position, the motor may be backdriven when the brake pedal is applied causing the brake pedal to drop. A malfunction DTC is stored, ABS is disabled and the ABS indicator lamp is turned "ON."

TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. This step ensures motor circuits are in the proper connector cavity.
2. This functionally checks the ability of the EMB to hold the motor. If the brake pedal moves during this test, it would indicate the EMB is slipping.
3. This step is used to release the tension of the motor pack prior to removal.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
An "Intermittent" malfunction in this DTC may result from a mechanical part of the system that sticks, binds, or slips.

The "frequency of the malfunction can be checked by using the enhanced diagnostic function of the Tech 1.

The static modulator test function of the Tech 1 may be used to locate an intermittent malfunction associated with the EMB.

NOTICE: This test may fail if low voltage (10 volts or less) was present when initialization occurred. Ensure battery/charging system is functioning properly.
