Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement

Tools Required
^ J21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Remove the turn signal cancel cam and steering shaft upper bearing spring.
3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
4. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly.
5. Remove the tilt spring only.
6. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01.





7. Remove the steering shaft position sensor.
8. Perform the following steps:





8.1. Remove the boot (4).
8.2. Remove the steering shaft seal (3).
8.3. Remove the sensor retainer (2).
8.4. Remove the boot seal (1).





9. Remove the 3 flat head screws.
10. Remove the cable support bracket.





11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the lower steering shaft (3) still attached.





12. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.





13. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the race and upper shaft assembly with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).





2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the marks you made from the disassemble procedure to the lower shaft assembly
3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.





4. Install the cable support bracket.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Lubricate the 3 flat head screws with LOCTITE 242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953529). Install the 3 flat head screws.
Tighten the screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





6. Install the steering shaft position sensor.





7. Perform the following steps:
7.1. Install the boot seal (1)
7.2. Install the sensor retainer (2)
7.3. Install the steering shaft seal (3)
7.4. Install the boot (4)





8. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).





9. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the lower steering shaft (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).

Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.





10. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly. Stake the pins in 3 places.
11. Install the tilt spring assembly only.
12. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly.

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service Precautions.

13. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
14. Install the turn signal cancel cam and steering shaft upper bearing spring.
15. Enable the SIR system.
