CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The Magnetic Steering Variable Assist (MSVA), also known as MAGNASTEER(R) incorporates its controller into the Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM). The EBTCM controls the amount of current supplied to the MAGNASTEER(R) actuator based on input from the following components:
- The wheel speed sensors
- The steering wheel position sensor
CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC
The MAGNASTEER(R) actuator or one or both of the MAGNASTEER(R) actuator circuit wires becomes open or shorted.
ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS
- A Malfunction DTC is stored.
- No Antilock Brake System (ABS)/Traction Control System (TRAC OFF) indicators are turned ON.
- The MAGNASTEER(R) is disabled.
The ABS/TCS remains functional.
CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC
1. A history DTC will clear after 100 consecutive ignition cycles if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.
2. You may use a scan tool in order to clear the DTC.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
1. The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction to occur:
- A poor connection
- A rubbed-through wire insulation
- A broken wire inside the insulation
2. Inspect the frequency of the malfunction by using the enhanced diagnostic function of the scan tool. Refer to Enhanced Diagnostics.
3. Inspect any circuitry that may cause the intermittent complaint for the following conditions:
- Backed out terminals
- Improper mating
- Broken locks
- Improperly formed terminals
- Damaged terminals
- Poor terminal to wiring connections
- Physical damage to the wiring harness
TEST DESCRIPTION
The numbers below refer to step numbers on the diagnostic table.
2. This step checks for an open or high resistance in the Magnasteer(R) circuit.
3. This step determines if the open or high resistance is in the Magnasteer(R) actuator, or the wiring harness.
16. This step checks if the Magnasteer63 actuator is shorted to the steering gear case.
