Parking Lock Cable: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Remove the console, as necessary.
3. Place the shift lever in the P (Park) position.
4. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.





5. Remove the left sound insulator and the knee bolster, as necessary.

Important: Do Step 6 with the key only in the RUN position.





6. Slip a screwdriver blade into a slot in the ignition switch inhibitor. Depress the cable latch and pull the cable from the inhibitor.
7. Pull the cable adjuster locking button at the shift-control bracket to the UP position.
8. Snap the cable from the park lock lever pin on the shift control assembly by pulling rearward on the cable end.
9. Depress the 2 cable adjuster tangs. Remove the tangs from the shifter control assembly.
10. Remove the cable clips.

Installation Procedure





1. Move the cable adjuster locking button in the UP position
2. Install the shift lever in the P (Park) position.
3. Snap the cable connector into the shifter control bracket. Make sure that the 2 cable adjuster tangs are engaged fully.

Important: Do not attempt to insert the cable with the key in any position other than RUN.





4. With the ignition in the RUN position, snap the cable into the inhibitor housing.
5. Turn the ignition key to LOCK.
6. Snap the cable end onto the park lock lever pin on the shift control assembly.
7. Make sure the ignition key is in the LOCK position. If you can not rotate the key to the LOCK position, lift the adjuster locking button and slide the adjuster rearward, compressing the spring. Hold the key and rotate the key to the LOCK position.
8. Make sure that the cable adjuster locking button is in the UP position.
9. Grasp the park lock cable near the forward end of the adjuster spring. Push the park lock cable toward the front of the vehicle in order to remove the slack. Release.
10. Move the cable adjuster rearward in the vehicle 1.5 mm (0.062 inch) from the position established in the previous step.





11. While holding this position, push down the adjuster locking button, flush with the adjuster body.
12. Install the left sound insulator and the knee bolster.
13. Install the console.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.

Important: Perform the following steps in order to verify the correct functional operation of the park lock system:

15. Make sure that the ignition key is in the OFF/LOCK position (the position in which you can remove the key).
16. Attempt to shift out of P. If you can shift out of P. readjust the park lock cable.
17. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
18. Shift to the N (Neutral) position.
19. Attempt to turn the ignition key to the OFF/LOCK position and remove the key. If you can turn the key to the OFF/LOCK position and remove the key, readjust the park lock cable.
20. Return the shifter to P and the ignition key to OFF/LOCK.
21. Attempt to remove the key. If you can not remove the key, readjust the park lock cable.
