Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick Connect Separator
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 39580 Engine Support Table

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.





2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
3. Drain the cooling system.
4. Drain the oil from the crankcase.
5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
6. Recover the air conditioning system.





7. Disconnect the fuel feed (1) and return lines (2) using the J 37088-A.
8. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid and hose from the right camshaft cover.





9. Disconnect the throttle (1) and cruise control (2) cables at the throttle body.
10. Disconnect the wire harness at the bulk head.
11. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the surge tank.





12. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the coolant crossover.





13. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
14. Disconnect the upper transmission cooler hose at the radiator.
15. Disconnect the lower transmission cooler hose at the transmission.





16. Disconnect the heater hoses from the coolant pipes at the rear of the engine.
17. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the brake booster.
18. Remove the shift control cable retaining bracket from the transmission.
19. Disconnect the shift control cable from the lever on the transmission.
20. Install the J28467-A.
21. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the junction block.





22. Remove the through bolt from the torque axis mount.
23. Remove the front engine mount bolts from the torque axis mount bracket. Set the mount aside.
24. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
25. Raise the vehicle.
26. Remove both front wheels.
27. Remove the right and left side splash shields.
28. Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering gear.
29. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the right ball joint. Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
30. Disconnect the right hand tie-rod from the knuckle.
31. Remove the right axle shaft from the hub assembly.
32. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering gear intermediate shaft.
33. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the left ball joint. Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
34. Disconnect the left hand tie-rod from the knuckle.
35. Remove the left axle shaft from the hub assembly.
36. Remove the exhaust system.
37. Disconnect the engine oil cooler hoses at the adapter if equipped.





38. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the oil pan.
39. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the right bank toward the front of the engine.
40. Remove the engine to transmission braces at the left bank at both the front and the rear of the engine.





41. Remove the flywheel cover.





42. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts





43. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.





44. Remove the oil filter. Remove the oil filter adapter from the engine block.
45. Remove the air conditioning hose and muffler from the rear of the air conditioning compressor.
46. Position the J 39580 under the engine.
47. Lower the vehicle.





48. Remove the left transmission mount.
49. Release the engine support.
50. Remove the bolts from the frame.
51. Raise the vehicle.
52. Remove the engine/transmission/frame assembly from under the vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick Connect Separator
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 39580 Engine Support Table

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
^ Tighten the engine to transmission bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).





2. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
^ Tighten the flywheel to converter bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





3. Install the flywheel cover.
^ Tighten the flywheel cover to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).





4. Install the engine to transmission brace at the oil pan.
^ Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the engine to transmission brace at the right bank, toward the rear of the engine.
^ Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the engine to transmission brace at the left bank, front and rear of the engine.
^ Tighten the bolt to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
7. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
8. With the powertrain on a dolly, move the powertrain into the approximate position under the vehicle.
9. Lower the vehicle onto the powertrain.
10. Align the powertrain frame to the body.
11. Install the mounting bolt.
^ Tighten the bolts to 192 Nm (142 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the J 28467-A,
13. Raise the vehicle.
14. Remove the dolly.





15. Install the left transmission mount.
^ Tighten the left transmission mount to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the air conditioning and muffler to the rear of the air conditioning compressor.





17. Install the oil filter adapter to the engine block.
18. Install the oil filter adapter bolts.
^ Tighten the oil filter adapter bolts to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
19. Connect the engine oil cooler hoses to the adapter if equipped.
^ Tighten the oil cooler fittings to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the oil filter.
21. Install the exhaust system.
22. Install the left axle shaft to the hub assembly.
23. Install the left tie-rod to the steering knuckle.
24. Install the left ball joint to the steering knuckle.
25. Install the pinch bolt to the steering gear intermediate shaft.
26. Install the right axle shaft to the hub assembly.
27. Install the right tie-rod to the steering knuckle.
28. Install the right ball joint to the steering knuckle.
29. Connect the electrical connector to the steering gear.
30. Install the right and left side splash shields.
31. Install both front wheels.
32. Lower the vehicle.
33. Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block.





34. install the front engine mount bolts to the torque axis bracket.
35. Install the through bolt to engine torque axis mount.
36. Connect the positive battery cable to the junction block.
37. Remove the J28467-A.
38. Connect the shift control cable to the transmission shift lever.
39. Install the shift control cable retaining bracket.
40. Connect the vacuum hose to the brake booster.





41. Connect the heater hoses to the coolant pipes at the rear of the engine.
42. Connect the lower transmission cooler hose to the transmission.
43. Connect the upper transmission cooler hose to the radiator.





44. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing.





45. Connect the upper radiator hose to the coolant crossover.
46. Connect the coolant hoses to the surge tank.
47. Connect the engine wire harness to the bulk head





48. Connect the throttle (1) and cruise control (2) cables to the throttle body.
49. Install the canister purge solenoid to the right cam cover.





50. Connect the fuel feed (1) and return (2) lines.
51. Refill the oil level.
52. Refill the coolant level.





53. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
54. Connect the negative battery cable.
55. Recharge the air conditioning.
