Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
In-Line Fuel Filter ReplacementRemoval Procedure
Notice: Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system in order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the open pipes and passages.
Important: Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.
Important: There is no service interval for in-pipe fuel filter replacement. Only replace the in-pipe fuel filter if it is restricted.
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release Procedure.
2. If plastic collar quick connect fittings are used, Refer to Fuel Line Coupler.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the in-pipe fuel filter. Refer to Fuel Line Coupler Service (Metal Collar).
5. Disconnect the threaded fitting at the outlet of the in-pipe fuel filter.
6. Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.
7. Remove the in-pipe fuel filter and mounting bracket.
8. Remove the in-pipe fuel filter from the in-pipe fuel filter mounting bracket.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Always re-attach the fuel lines and fuel filter with all original type fasteners and hardware. Do not repair sections of fuel pipes.
1. Remove the protective caps from the new in-pipe fuel filter.
2. Slide the in-pipe fuel filter into the in-pipe fuel filter mounting bracket.
3. Install the in-pipe fuel filter and mounting bracket.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
4. Install the in-pipe fuel filter mounting bracket retaining bolt.
- Tighten the in-pipe fuel filter mounting bracket bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
5. Connect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the in-pipe fuel filter. Refer to Fuel Line Coupler Service (Metal Collar).
6. Install the new O-rings to the in-pipe fuel filter.
7. Connect the threaded fitting at the outlet of the in-pipe fuel filter. To prevent the in-pipe fuel filter from turning, use a back-up wrench in order.
- Tighten the in-pipe fuel filter outlet nut to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Tighten the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Inspect for leaks.
11.1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
11.2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
11.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
11.4. Check for fuel leaks.
12. Reinstall the fuel injection sight shield. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
