Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURE^ Tools Required

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION: Refer to In Battery Disconnect Caution Service Precautions.
2. Remove the shift control cable and the bracket at the transmission.
3. Remove the manual shaft lever and the transmission range selector switch.
4. Install the J 28467-360. Load the support fixture by tightening the wing nuts several turns in order to take the weight of the powertrain off of the mounts and the frame.
5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling in Cooling System.
6. Remove the vacuum line at the brake booster.
7. Remove the transmission vent hose.
8. Disconnect the following electrical connectors: (2) transmission The speed sensor The power steering gear
9. Disconnect the upper transmission cooler line at the radiator.
10. Disconnect the lower transmission cooler line at the transmission.
11. Remove the retaining bracket nut at the transmission.
12. Disconnect the coolant bypass pipe at the thermostat housing. Set the pipe aside.
13. Remove the left transmission mount bolts.
14. Remove the right transmission mount bolts.
15. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in Service Precautions.
16. Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
17. Remove the left front splash shield.
18. Remove both tie rod cotter pins and nuts and separate both tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft and Link in Suspension.
19. Remove both lower ball joint cotter pins and nuts and separate both bag joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
20. Remove the left drive axle nut and remove the drive axle from the hub.
21. Remove both drive axles from the transmission. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
22. Remove the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
23. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
24. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts. Mark the flywheel to converter position so that you can replace the converter in the same position. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
25. Remove the complete exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System.
26. Remove the exhaust manifold rear pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Rear Pipe (Y Pipe) in Exhaust System.
27. Remove the steering rack to right transmission mount bolts.
28. Remove the bolt from the right transmission mount.
29. Remove the frame to right transmission mount bolt and remove the mount.
30. Remove the power steering line retaining the clamp from the frame.
31. Remove the through bolt from the right side of the steering rack and support the steering rack assembly.
32. Remove the support frame.
33. Remove the knock sensor shield.
34. Remove the engine to transmission brace.
35. Remove the transmission mount to bracket to bracket retaining nuts.
36. Remove the rear transmission mount bracket from the transmission and body.
37. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the park/neutral switch.
38. Remove the right and left lower transmission to engine bolts.
39. Remove the frame bolts and the frame.
40. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
41. Lower the transmission.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the transmission assembly into the vehicle.
2. Install the engine-to-transmission bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the rear transmission mount to the body.
4. Install the rear transmission mount bracket to the transmission.
5. Install the left lower transmission to engine bolt.
6. Install the right lower transmission to engine bolt.
7. Install the electrical connector to park/neutral position switch.
8. Install the engine to transmission brace.
9. Install the knock sensor shield.
10. Connect the electrical connectors to the speed sensor and the knock sensor.
11. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
12. Install the flywheel cover.
13. Install the transmission to oil pan brace.
14. Install the frame assembly and the mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 192 Nm (142 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
15. Install the left transmission mount to frame bolt.
16. Install the through bolt to the right side of the steering rack.
17. Install the steering line retaining clamp to the frame.
18. Install the right transmission mount.
19. Install the rear manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Rear Pipe (Y Pipe) in Exhaust System.
20. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System.
21. Install both drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
22. Install both ball joints into the steering knuckles. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
23. Install both tie rods into the steering knuckles. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft and Link in Suspension.
24. Install the left splash shield.
25. Install both front wheels and tires. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Install the right and left upper transmission to engine bolts.
28. Remove the J 28467-360.
29. Install the coolant bypass hose at the thermostat housing.
30. Install the transmission line bracket.
31. Install the upper and lower transmission cooler lines.
32. Install the shift control cable and the bracket.
33. Install the air intake duct.
34. Install the vacuum line to brake booster and the transmission vent hose.
35. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling in Cooling System.
36. Check the fluid level. Fill the fluid to the proper level.
37. Connect the negative battery cable.
