Case Cover, A/T
REMOVAL PROCEDURE^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION: Refer to in Battery Disconnect Caution Service Precautions.
2. Remove the park/neutral position switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
3. Install the J 28467-360
4. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in Service Precautions.
5. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Suspension.
6. Remove the inner splash shield.
7. Remove the tie rod end from the knuckle assembly. Refer to Strut Assembly in Suspension.
8. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm. Refer to Control Arm in Suspension.
9. Remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
10. Remove the drive axle from the transmission. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
11. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering gear intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft in Suspension.
CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
12. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft in Suspension.
13. Position a transmission jack under the transmission oil pan. Raise the jack until lit supports the transmission.
14. Remove the three frame-to-body bolts on the left side.
15. Lower the transmission jack and the transmission in order to gain access to the case side cover.
16. Remove the oil cooler pipes at the case. Refer to AT Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement.
17. Remove the case side cover bolts.
18. Remove the case side cover.
19. Clean the case and side cover gasket surfaces.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the new gaskets on the case.
2. Install the case side cover.
3. Install the new side cover bolts.
^ Tighten the side cover bolts to 11 Nm (98 inch lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the oil cooler pipes to the transmission. Refer to AT Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement.
5. Raise the transmission so that the frame bolts can be installed.
6. Install the three frame-to-body bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove the transmission jack.
8. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft in Suspension.
9. Install the pinch bolt at the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft in Suspension.
10. Install the drive axle to the transmission. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
11. Install the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
12. Remove the drive axle seal protectors.
13. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm. Refer to Control Arm in Suspension.
14. Install the tie rod end to the knuckle. Refer to Strut Assembly in Suspension.
15. Install the inner splash shield.
16. Install the left front tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Suspension.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Remove the J 28467-360.
19. Install the park/neutral position switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
20. Connect the negative battery cable.
21. Inspect for leaks.
22. Check the fluid level. Refer to AT Fluid/Filter Changing.
