Ball Joint: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDUREThe ball joint is not serviced separate from the control arm. To separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle, use the following procedure.
^ Tools Required:
- J 36226 Ball Joint Separator
1. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle by the frame, allowing the control arms to hang free.
2. Remove the cotter pin from the ball joint. Loosen the nut.
3. Use the J 36226 in order to remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
1. Install the ball joint nut onto the ball joint stud at the knuckle.
Tighten
^ Tighten the ball joint-to-knuckle nut to 10 Nm (88 inch lbs.).
^ Tighten the two flats to a minimum of 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) in order to align the cotter pin slot.
2. Install the cotter pin. Turn the nut to the maximum of one flat in the tightening direction in order to align the cotter pin.
3. Lower the vehicle.
