On-Vehicle Service
^ Tool Required:
- J 24319-B Puller
- Or Equivalent
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise vehicle with suspension contact hoist and suitably support.
2. Both front tires and wheels.
3. Exhaust system.
4. Remove fasteners and fold back wheelhouse splash shield enough to allow removal of steering gear.
WARNING: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or Intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
CAUTION: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the "LOCK" position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.
5. Intermediate shaft lower connection.
6. Using J 24319-B, tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
7. Unsnap and remove power steering heat shield.
8. Magnasteer (TM) electrical connector.
9. Power steering gear outlet and inlet hoses from steering gear.
10. Steering gear mounting bolts.
11. Support rear of frame.
12. Remove rear frame bolts, and lower rear of frame to allow steering gear removal.
CAUTION: Do not lower rear of frame too far, as damage to engine components nearest to the cowl may result.
13. Steering gear through right wheel opening.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Steering gear through right wheel opening.
2. Raise rear of frame.
3. Frame bolts.
4. Remove stands.
5. Three steering gear mounting bolts.
^ Tighten Bolts:
- In sequence.
- To 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.).
6. Power steering gear outlet and inlet hoses.
^ Tighten hose connections to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
7. Magnasteer(TM) electrical connector.
8. Steering gear heat shield.
9. Tie rod ends to steering knuckles.
Tighten Tie Rod nuts to 47 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
10. Cotter pin. Tighten nut up to 1/6 additional turn, or to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) max., to align cotter pin slot. Do not back off nut for cotter pin insertion.
11. Intermediate shaft lower connection.
Tighten bolt to 47 N.m (35 ft. lbs.).
12. Exhaust system.
13. Wheelhouse splash shield.
14. Tires and wheels.
^ Tighten wheel nuts to 140 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
15. Lower vehicle.
16. Fill and bleed system.
^ Inspect for leaks.
