Interior Trim - Headliner Sags at Front Edge of Sunroof

File In Section: 10 - Body

Bulletin No.: 73-16-19

Date: November, 1997

Subject:
Headliner Sags at Front Edge of Sunroof Opening
(Install Hook and Loop Material to Headliner and Roof)

Model:
1997-98 Oldsmobile Aurora - with Sunroof (RPO CF5)

Condition
Some owners may comment that the headliner sags at the front edge of the sunroof opening.

Cause
The condition may be due to the roof header-to-headliner fit.

Correction
Install hook and loop material to the headliner and roof using the following repair procedure.

Repair Procedure

1. Loosen the headliner from the front sheet metal at the attaching points, across the front rail, the sunshade corners and at the overhead console so that the headliner can be dropped far enough for repair.

2. Using a razor knife, cut the headliner covering material and foam from the headliner backing material along the front of the headliner in the sunroof opening. The material should be cut approximately 609 mm (24 in.) along the top edge of the black felt material. Only cut the material along the straight edge of the sunroof opening flange. Use caution not to cut the headliner composite substrate material.

3. Using scissors, make a vertical cut at each side of the cut made in Step 2, and remove the section of headliner material, foam, and black felt from the center of the headliner. Use caution not to cut the headliner composite substrate material.

4. Using hot melt adhesive, attach a 609 x 25 mm (24 x 1 in.) strip of hook and loop material (3M sew-on DUALLOCK(R)) or equivalent) to the headliner composite substrate material in the location of the removed material. Install self-adhesive hook and loop material, fuzzy part, (3M Velcro(R)) or equivalent) to roof panel at the sunroof opening flange. Approximately 3 mm (1/8 in.) of the fuzzy hook and loop material should overlap into the sunroof opening and be rolled over the flange edge.

5. Carefully press the headliner up, connecting the hook and loop material together along the entire length.

6. Reinstall the overhead console and sunshades.
