SUBJECT:
INFORMATION ON GOODWRENCH TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PROGRAM INTRODUCTION (PREVIOUSLY SRTA PROGRAM)
MODEL:
1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA
TRANSAXLE APPLICATION:
1995 HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E (RPO MH1)
The HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E Goodwrench Transmission Assembly Program (Previously SRTA Program) and limited on-vehicle repair, is being introduced starting May 1, 1994. This Goodwrench transmission model can only be ordered as a V.I.P. unit through your local General Motors Service Parts Operation (GMSPO), Parts Distribution Center.
The HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E is a new front-wheel electronically controlled transaxle used in the Oldsmobile Aurora with the Premium V8 DOHC engine.
Before removing an existing HYDRA-MATIC 4TBO-E, PCM Adaptive Control Information concerning that unit "MUST" be recorded on the product feedback form provided and returned with that core.
Whenever a HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E replacement is necessary, there are two PCM OUTPUT OVERRIDES WHICH MUST BE CLEARED. This information is given in the Service Information section of this bulletin.
Goodwrench Transmission Advantages:
- Goodwrench Transmissions are the product of a highly successful, customer satisfaction driven program which parallels existing HYDRA-MATIC programs.
- All Goodwrench Transmission units are designed and remanufactured to current engineering specifications and are often less costly than a major overhaul.
- GMSPO Parts Distribution Centers are committed to 48-hour maximum delivery time for all Goodwrench Transmission models, with no VIP charges.
In order to properly analyze 1995 transmission concerns, please return original unit to your local PDC "AS SOON AS POSSIBLE".
General Guidelines:
On-Vehicle Service or Goodwrench Transmission
- To properly diagnose the HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E transaxle, and determine when a HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E Goodwrench Transmission is needed, it is recommended that DRIVEABILITY and TRANSMISSION technicians take Premium VB POWERTRAIN CONTROLS course 16022.01 (in Canada 16013.16) and thoroughly understand transaxle information contained in Section 6E and 7A of the Aurora Service Manual.
- Transaxle conditions considered for Goodwrench Transaxle usage:
- All repairs which cannot be corrected by replacement of the parts shown in Figure 2.
- It has been determined by complete diagnosis and troubleshooting, using the procedure outlined in Section 6E and 7A of the Aurora Service Manual and On-Vehicle Diagnostic Information and Overrides, that the unit needs to be replaced.
- Dealership overhauls for the entire transaxle will not be allowed.
- Dealer HYDRA-MATIC 4TBO-E transaxle repairs include:
- Limited on-vehicle serviceable items.
(Refer to Figure 2)
SERVICE PARTS INFORMATION:
HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E Goodwrench Transmission model replacement information:
Part numbers listed are currently available at GMSPO. Part numbers are accurate at time of printing and are subject to change. Follow service procedures outlined with the components whenever replacement is necessary.
SERVICE INFORMATION:
The following must be performed whenever a HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E replacement is necessary.
Record all Adaptive Parameter Information "before" removing the existing transaxle. This information sheet "must" be returned with the core unit. Photocopy Figure 6 for additional copies of adaptive control forms.
Cooler Flushing
Cooler flushing must be performed whenever a transmission/transaxle is removed for service. It is essential to flush the cooler for Goodwrench Transmission installation, major overhaul, in case of pump or torque converter replacement, or when fluid contamination is suspected. Use Kent-Moore Tool J 35944 to flush the cooler.
^ Cooler flow rates: 1500 + RPM = 7-9
liters at min. line, 12-14 max. line.
Fluid Checking Procedure
Follow the fluid checking procedure outlined in Figure 3 whenever checking or adding fluid to the HYDRA-MATIC 4TBO-E transaxle.
Bottom Pan Bolt Torque Procedure
Whenever replacement of the bottom pan gasket is necessary, refer to Figure 4. This information is also contained in all bottom pan gasket service packages. The final torque specification of 10-12 N-m (8-9 lbs.ft.) must not be exceeded. If this specification is exceeded, the bottom pan gasket could be damaged and a transaxle fluid leak may result.
HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E Transaxle Removal and Replacement Procedure
Refer to the on-vehicle repair section in the Oldsmobile Aurora Service Manual whenever the removal and installation of a HYDRA-MATIC 4T80-E transaxle is necessary.
