Removal and Replacement

Refer to Fig. 32 through Fig. 34 when removing and installing transaxle.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove shift control cable and bracket at transaxle.
3. Remove manual shaft lever and transaxle range selector switch.
4. Install engine support fixture tool No. J-28467 or equivalent, then raise powertrain until weight is off mounts.
5. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheel and splash shield assemblies.
6. Remove both front wheels.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors for transaxle, speed sensor and power steering gear.
8. Disconnect power steering pressure hose at steering gear.
9. Install plugs in steering gear and pressure line to prevent fluid leakage or contamination.
10. Disconnect power steering return hose at auxiliary cooler.
11. Install plugs in cooler and return hose to prevent fluid leakage and contamination.
12. Rotate steering intermediate shaft so that steering gear sub shaft clamp bolt is accessible from left wheel opening, then remove clamp bolt.
13. Disconnect steering intermediate shaft from steering gear.
14. Remove stabilizer links from steering knuckles.
15. Separate tie rods from steering knuckles.
16. Separate ball joints from steering knuckles.
17. Remove both drive axle nuts and separate drive axles from hubs.
18. Remove drive axles from transaxle.
19. Remove engine oil pan to transaxle bracket.
20. Remove torque converter cover.
21. Remove flywheel to converter bolts.
22. Transaxle cooler pipes from transaxle.
23. Disconnect left transaxle and right engine mounts at frame.
24. Support frame and remove frame bolts.
25. Remove left transaxle mount from transaxle.
26. Remove engine to transaxle bracket.
27. Install engine support fixture tool No. J28864 or equivalent.
28. Remove engine to transaxle bolts and lower transaxle.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
