Idle Learn Procedure

IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE (WITHOUT TECH 1)
An "IDLE LEARN" routine has heen implemented in the PCM software to allow for a loss of air flow through the throttle body during closed throttle operation. This reduction in air flow can be caused by deposit buildup on the throttle valve.

The "IDLE LEARN" routine is different from the "TP SENSOR LEARN" routine of the PCM. "TP SENSOR LEARN" is performed by the PCM after the ignition is turned to "OFF." "IDLE LEARN" is performed by the PCM when the engine is running and specific conditions are met.

The "IDLE LEARN" routine of the PCM calculates a throttle angle correction or offset that is used during closed throttle idle control. If an improper throttle angle offset is maintained by the PCM, a high idle at closed throttle or stall condition may occur. Performing the "IDLE LEARN" procedure lets the PCM learn the correct throttle angle offset.

THE "IDLE LEARN" procedure should be performed when:

- After the "TP Sensor Learn" procedure.
- The ISC actuator is adjusted or replaced.
- The TP sensor is replaced.
- The throttle body is replaced.
- The PCM is replaced.

To perform "IDLE LEARN":

1. Start the engine.
2. Allow the vehicle to idle continuously until the coolant temperature is 80°C (176°F), then idle an additional 5 minutes.
3. With the transaxie in "PARK" range, briefly accelerate the engine over 1500 RPM.
4. Return to idle.
5. Apply the brakes and place the transaxle in "DRIVE" range.
6. Idle the vehicle for 2 minutes or until the Malfuntion Indicator Light (MIL) (Service Engine Soon) goes out.

TP SENSOR/IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE (WITH TECH 1)

NOTE: This procedure utilizes the capabilities of the Tech 1 scan tool. For the procedure to work properly, the vehicle transaxle must be in park or neutral and the coolant temperature must be at least 82°C (180°F).

1. Connect Tech 1 scan tool.
2. Select "ISC System," then select "TP Sensor/Idle Learn" in the "Misc. Test" mode.
3. Proceed with TP Sensor/Idle Learn as directed.
