Accessory Drive Belt - Routing and Replacement Procedure

Section 6A - Revised Accessory Drive Belt Routing and Replacement Procedure

Models:
1995 Buick Riviera with 3800 Engine (VIN K - RPO L36)

1995 Oldsmobile Aurora with 4.0 Engine (VIN C - RPO L47)

This information should be added to Sections 6A2 and 6A8 of the appropriate Service Manual. To properly replace the accessory drive belt, the ensuing steps must be followed:

Figure 1 replaces Figure 12 found on Page 6A8-12.

Riviera:

Note:
To avoid engine oil pan damage, use a block of wood between jack and oil pan. Be sure the block extends past the complete width of the oil pan.

1. Place a jack with a block of wood on it under oil pan to support engine.
2. Remove torque axis engine mount bolt where it connects the mount to the engine mounting bracket.
3. Remove engine mounting bracket lower stud and lower engine to allow stud to clear frame rail.
4. Disconnect wiring harness retainer near bracket.
5. Raise engine and reinstall bolt into torque axis mount. Lower engine to allow spacer to be removed.
6. Remove belt.
7. Install belt using routing shown in Figure 1.
8. Install spacer. Remove bolt from torque axis bracket and lower engine.
9. Install harness retainer.
10. Install mounting bracket stud.
11. Raise engine and install torque axis mount bolt. Tighten bolt to 87 N-m (52 lbs.ft.).





Aurora: (Figure 2)

1. Release belt tensioner and remove belt from power steering and alternator pulleys. Twist belt to get between tensioner and front cover and between power steering pulley and engine mount bracket.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Remove right side splash shield (turn wheel to extreme right).
4. Remove belt from crankshaft and A/C compressor pulleys. Twist belt to get between idler pulley and engine mount bracket and remove belt.
5. Lower vehicle.
6. Install belt around power steering pulley (necessary to twist belt to get past front cover bolts) and let belt hang from power steering pulley.
7. Twist belt to get between tensioner and front cover, wrap belt around alternator.
8. Remove belt from power steering pulley and set aside (this will give you slack in the belt to work with).
9. Raise vehicle.
10. Twist belt to get between tensioner pulley and engine front cover, wrap belt around crankshaft and A/C compressor pulleys.
11. Install right side splash shield.
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Position belt around power steering pulley and release tensioner.
