Driver Information Center - Date/Eta Incorrect/CD Inop.

FILE IN SECTION: 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical

BULLETIN NO.: 54-83-01

DATE: May, 1995

SUBJECT:
Driver Information Center Date/ETA Incorrect or Optional 12-Disc CD Changer Inop (Replace with Exact Design Radio or Cluster Part Number)

MODEL:
1995 Oldsmobile Aurora

CONDITION

Some owners may experience one or both of the following conditions:

1. Time related functions of the Driver Information Center (DIC), such as estimated time of arrival (ETA) and day-month display, do not operate correctly. For more detail, see "Additional Information" below.

2. The radio will not operate the optional 12-disc CD changer.

CAUSE

During service procedures, and/or CD changer installation, incorrect audio system components are used, causing system compatibility problems.

Because the 1995 Aurora release was pulled-ahead nearly six months (Spring 94), approximately the first six months of production use 1994 radio and cluster part numbers.

1. These early (1st design) vehicles used instrument clusters that are not compatible with the later (2nd design) radios. Using this combination will result in DIC time function errors. (For more detail, see "Additional Information" below.)

2. The 12-disc CD changer is not compatible with the 1st design BOSE radio (or either version of the standard UPO radio).

CORRECTION

1. Use the following PART NUMBER USAGE TABLE to identify the correct radio and cluster service part numbers for a particular vehicle.

2. Refer to the following CD CHANGER COMPATIBILITY TABLE when choosing the correct CD changer for a particular vehicle.

Part Number Usage Table

(Vehicle design version can be identified by looking at build-date and VIN number,)

Important:
AC DELCO will not provide a part return credit, UNLESS THE RETURNED PART NUMBER IS IDENTICAL TO THE EXCHANGE UNIT THAT WAS ORDERED. MAKE SURE TO VERIFY THE CORRECT PART NUMBER before ordering.

CD Changer Compatibility Table

Customers wishing to add multi-disc CD changer capability should refer to the chart.

PARTS INFORMATION

Parts are currently available from GMSPO and AC DELCO exchange centers.

Additional Information

CD Changer Compatibility

The radio should NOT be changed in order to achieve 12-disc CD changer compatibility, because:

1. Neither version of the standard dual-playback radio (UPO) is compatible with the 12-disc changer. Only the 2nd design Bose (UU8) can be used with the 12-disc.

2. Retrofitting a 2nd design Bose (UU8) radio into a early build vehicle will cause DIC problems. These can be corrected only by also replacing the instrument cluster.

3. Dealers attempting to return 1st design radios in exchange for 2nd design parts will not receive return credit.

Symptoms - Cluster Time Function Errors

This condition is caused when the cluster's internal clock is no longer synchronized with the radio clock. This occurs when the radio clock is reset by the customer. Normally, a data message between the radio and cluster will reestablish synchronization between the clocks. However, if the wrong cluster or radio part number is installed, a software anomaly may cause the cluster clock synchronization to be delayed for up to eight days.

While the cluster internal clock is not synchronized, the customer may notice the following symptoms:

1. The DIC display shows the incorrect Estimated Time of Arrival.

2. The DIC date changes before or after the radio clock reads midnight (12:00 a.m.).

Remember, the customer will observe the above symptoms for only 1 - 8 days after resetting the radio clock. After that time period, the clock will reachieve synchronization and the symptoms will disappear. This condition can be entirely eliminated by ensuring that the radio and cluster part numbers are matched, per the above PART NUMBER USAGE TABLE.
