DTC 39

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Circuit:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid is a normally closed valve which consists of an electrical connector, coil assembly, ball, armature and a return spring. The TCC solenoid is a three part assembly which uses a negative (-) duty cycle and pulse width modulation to control the rate of TCC apply.

DTC 39 WILL SET WHEN
- No DTC(s) 24, 26, 27, 28, 31, 32, 34, 56 and 75.
- Transaxle in 3rd or 4th gear.
- Engine operating.
- TCC commanded "ON" (90%).
- Transaxle not in park or neutral.
- Slip speed 48 RPM or greater for 45 seconds.
- Throttle position switch open
- Delivered torque from engine not 20 lb. ft. or less (coast down condition).
- Delivered torque from engine not 508 lb. ft. or more (engine under extreme load).

ACTION TAKEN (PCM WILL DEFAULT TO)
- With a current DTC 39 set, the PCM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (Service Engine Soon).
- No TCC (torque converter clutch).

DTC 39 WILL CLEAR WHEN
The fault no longer exists.

DTC CHART TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

1. This test checks the brake pedals ability to close and open the circuit.
2. This test checks CKT's 1039 and 420 for an open.
3. This test checks to see if the brake pedal is out of adjustment. If adjustment is ok then CKT 420 is checked for a short to power.
4. This test checks for power at terminal "U" of the engine harness.
5. This test checks CKT 422 between the transmission connector terminal "T" and PCM terminal "E13". The test light must increase in brightness as the PWM increases to 50% duty cycle.
6. This test checks the transaxle harness and the TCC solenoid for opens. If an open circuit is found, replace the transaxle harness.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
The HVAC fuse also runs the A/C compressor clutch and relay. If CKT's 1039 and 420 are OK through the TCC switch and the transaxle, but fuse blows, check the A/C clutch circuit. Check for poor connections at the transaxle 20-way connector, especially pin "E-13". Ensure the TCC brake switch is adjusted properly. If DTC 39 resets after all checks and repairs have been performed, check for possible hydraulic or mechanical problems.
