Interior - Rattle From L/R Rear Seat Backs On Rough Roads

IF YOU CONFIRM:
^ While driving on a rough road, a rattle noise is heard from either left or right rear seat backs.
^ The noise is not present when the rear seats are lowered (cargo position).
ACTION:
^ First perform procedure to adjust clearance between the Rear Seat Back Locks and Strikers.
And if rattle is still present after adjustment,
^ Replace only the rattling "Lock" or "Lock and Striker" (see Table A for VIN and part information) and then adjust clearance with procedure.
NOTE:
Refer to Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for procedures to replace Rear Seat Back Locks and Strikers.

The purpose of "ACTIONS" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Rear Seat Back bolt tightening procedure
1. Fold both rear seats down.
2. Lift carpet from lower section of seats (secured by Velcro) to expose bolts.
3. Loosen all seat back bolts for both rear seats.
For left side seat:
4. Temporarily tighten bolts (1) and (2) in Figure 1.
5. Fold seat back up and check that lock and striker do not interfere.
^ Readjust as needed.
6. Fold seat back down and torque all bolts (using the diagram in Figure 1) in four steps to 45 Nm:
a. Torque left lower bolt (3)
b. Torque right lower bolt (4)
c. Torque left upper bolt (5)
d. Torque right upper bolt (6)
For right side seat:
NOTE:
Torque pattern for the right side seat back is different than the left side.
7. Temporarily tighten bolts (1) and (2) in Figure 2.
^ Readjust as needed.
8. Fold seat back up and check that lock and striker do not interfere.
^ Readjust as needed.
9. Fold seat back down and torque all bolts (using the diagram in Figure 2) in four steps to 45 Nm:
a. Torque right upper bolt (3)
b. Torque left upper bolt (4)
c. Torque right lower bolt (5)
d. Torque left lower bolt (6)
10. Confirm that rattle is gone.
^ If rattle is gone, do not replace the Locks or Strikers; procedure is complete.
11. If rattle is still present, confirm which Lock/Striker is the source of the rattle with Check Latch Alignment Procedure below.
Check Latch Alignment
1. Apply tape to striker of the seat with rattle (Figure 3).
NOTE:
Use an auto body painters tape, or equivalent, that will not leave a residue when removed.
2. Latch seat:
^ Pull back on seat (Figure 4) until Lock Knob indicates that Lock has engaged Striker (Figures 6).
> Seat should move freely over Striker without any contact until Lock engages.
3. Unlatch and fold seat forward then inspect tape for witness marks on top and bottom of tape.
4. Replace only the Lock or Lock/Striker that is making contact. (See Table above for applicability VIN range)
5. Remove tape after check
