STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE

Disassembly and Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

CAUTION:
- Disassemble and assemble steering gear assembly by fixing the mounting area with a vise using copper plates.
- Clean steering gear assembly with kerosene before disassembling. Be careful to avoid splashing or applying any kerosene over connector of discharge port or return port.
1.Loosen outer socket lock nut, and remove outer socket.

CAUTION:
When loosening lock nut, be sure to fix outer socket with a wrench or an equivalent to prevent ball joint from getting contact with knuckle.
2.Remove boot clamps, and then remove boot from inner socket.

CAUTION:
Never damage inner socket and gear housing assembly when removing boot. Inner socket and gear housing assembly must be replaced if inner socket and gear housing assembly are damaged because it may cause foreign material interfusion.
3.Remove inner socket from gear housing assembly.

4.Measure adjusting screw (1) height "H", and loosen adjusting screw.

CAUTION:
- Never loosen adjusting screw 2 turns or more.
- Replace steering gear assembly if adjusting screw is loosened 2 turns or more and it is removed.
5.Remove lock nut (2), adjusting screw, spring (4) and retainer (3)
from gear housing assembly (5).
6.Remove joint cover from gear housing assembly.

CAUTION:
Never damage the locating protrusion of the joint cover.
7.Remove dust cover from pinion assembly.
8.Remove snap ring, and then remove pinion assembly from gear housing assembly.
9.Pull pinion assembly from gear housing assembly.

CAUTION:
Never damage pinion assembly and gear housing assembly inner wall.
10.Pull rack assembly from gear housing assembly.

CAUTION:
Never damage rack assembly and gear housing assembly inner wall.

ASSEMBLY

1.Apply recommended grease to teeth part and bush part of rack assembly, if necessary.
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, One Luber MO No.2 (manufactured by Kyodo yushi) or equivalent.
2.Apply recommended grease to back of rack assembly, if necessary.
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, Multemp AC-P (manufactured by Kyodo yushi) or equivalent.
3.Install rack assembly to gear housing assembly.

CAUTION:
Never damage rack assembly and gear housing assembly inner wall.
4.Apply recommended grease to pinion assembly needle bearing, if necessary.
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, Multemp AC-P (manufactured by Kyodo yushi) or equivalent.
5.Install pinion assembly to gear housing assembly.
6.Install snap ring to pinion assembly.

CAUTION:
- Never reuse snap ring.
- When installing snap ring, check that the chamfered surface faces upward.
7.Install inner socket to rack assembly.
8.Apply recommended grease to dust cover, and then install dust cover to pinion assembly.
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, Idemitsu Autorex A or equivalent.

9.Decide on the neutral position for the rack stroke (L).
Rack stroke neutral position (L): Refer to,
"Rack Stroke".

10.Apply recommended grease to around retainer (3), then install retainer, spring (4) and adjusting screw (1) to gear housing assembly (5).
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, Multemp AC-P (manufactured by Kyodo yushi) or equivalent.
11.Apply recommended thread locking sealant to the thread (2
turns thread), and then screw in the adjusting screw until it reaches height "H" from gear housing assembly measured before disassembling.
Use Genuine Thread Locking Sealant, Three Bond 1141 or equivalent.
12.Tighten lock nut to (2) the specified torque securing it to prevent adjusting screw from freewheeling condition.
13.Move rack assembly 10 strokes throughout the full stroke so that the parts can fit with each other.

14.Using preload gauge [SST: {[ST-3127] ST-3127S000 (J-25765-A)] and preload adapter [SST: KV-48103400 (-), measure rotating torque of pinion assembly. If the measurement is outside of the specified range, readjust pinion rotating torque. If the measurement is outside of the specified range for readjust, replace steering gear assembly.

15.Set dial gauge to the back of rack assembly on the pinion assembly side around the center of stroke. Measure displacement of rack under torsional torque of ± 7.8 Nm (0.80 kg-m, 69 in-lb), and then check if it is within the standard value. If the measurement is outside the standard value, adjust it again. After the readjustment, if measurement is still outside the standard value, replace steering gear assembly.
Standard value: 0.1 mm (0.004 in) or less
16.Apply recommended grease to inner socket, and then install boot to gear housing assembly and inner socket.
Use Genuine Lithium Soap, Idemitsu Autorex A or equivalent.

CAUTION:
Never reuse boot.

17.Install boot clamp (large diameter) (1) to boot using boot band crimping tool [SST: KV-40107300 (-)].

CAUTION:
- Never reuse boot clamp (large diameter).
- Install boot clamp (large diameter) (1) securely to boot groove, and crimp it so as to have clearance of 3 mm (0.12
in) or less as shown.
18.Install boot clamp (small diameter) to boot.

CAUTION:
Never reuse boot clamp (small diameter).

19.Install joint cover (1) to gear housing assembly (2).

CAUTION:
Install joint cover so that the protrusion for locating is securely set to gear housing groove.

20.Adjust inner socket to standard length (L), and then tighten lock nut (1) to the specified torque. Check length again after tightening lock nut.
Inner socket length (L): Inner Socket Length.

CAUTION:
- When tightening lock nut, be sure to fix outer socket with a wrench or equivalent to prevent ball joint from getting contact with knuckle.
- Adjust toe-in after this procedure. The length achieved after toe-in adjustment is not necessary the above value.
