Classification:EC02-029
Reference:
NTB02-125
Date:
December 19, 2002
2002 SENTRA QG18 ENGINE; ROUGH IDLE, HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING, OR IDLE HUNTING
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2002 Sentra (B15) - With QG18 Engine ONLY
APPLIED DATE:
Vehicles built on March 21, 2002 or later, until end of 2002 model production
IF YOU CONFIRM:
An applied vehicle shows the following symptoms:
^ MIL "ON," OR
^ rough idle, hesitation when accelerating, OR
^ idle hunting.
NOTE:
DTC P1402 (EGR Function) may or may not be found stored.
ACTIONS:
^ Use CONSULT-II to confirm if DTC P1402 is stored in "Self-Diagnosis Results"
A. If DTC P1402 is found: perform Remove and Replace EGR Valve.
B. If other symptoms listed above exist without DTC P1402 stored:
Perform Monitoring EGR Temperature Sensor Voltage with CONSULT-II.
IMPORTANT:
The purpose of ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Use CONSULT-II to confirm if DTC P1402 is stored in "Self-Diagnosis Results"
^ If DTC P1402 is found stored: perform Remove and Replace EGR Valve (below)
^ If DTC P1402 is not found stored, but there are other symptoms: perform Monitoring EGR Temperature Sensor Voltage with CONSULT-II (below).
Remove and Replace EGR Valve
1. Remove the EGR Valve and install the replacement EGR Valve listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section.
2. Use CONSULT-II to clear the DTC code.
3. Verify the MIL does not come back 'ON' and that symptoms described are no longer present.
Monitoring EGR Temperature Sensor Voltage with CONSULT-II
1. Connect CONSULT-II.
2. Drive the vehicle for at least 5 minutes, or until the engine reaches normal "warmed up" operating temperature.
3. Immediately following the warm-up drive, allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes.
4. Using CONSULT-II: Check the EGR temperature sensor voltage with the engine idling:
^ If the value is greater than 1.06 Volts (OK - see Figure 1A), this bulletin does not apply. Refer to the EC (Engine Control) section in the 2002 Sentra Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnosis.
^ If the value is less than 1.06 Volts (NG - see Figure 1B) the EGR Valve is leaking. Remove the valve and install the replacement valve listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section. Go to step 5.
5. Use CONSULT-II to do the following:
^ Confirm DTC P1402 has not stored.
^ If DTC P1402 has stored, erase the DTC code.
6. Verify the symptoms described are no longer present.
7. Disconnect CONSULT-II.
