Service Procedure

1. Ensure the axle shaft plugs and cooler line plugs are secure before starting the procedure. Also, plug the vent line hole with a suitable tool to prevent fluid loss during the procedure.

2. Turn the transaxle upside down and remove the oil pan and it's gasket from the transaxle.

IMPORTANT:
Maintain absolute cleanliness when working on or handling any of the internal transaxle components. Use lint-free rags and make sure dirt and debris do not come in contact with any of the internal transaxle components.

3. Remove the retaining clip from the solenoid harness terminal body (see Figure 1).

4. Push down on the solenoid harness terminal body and extract the harness from the transaxle through the terminal body hole.

Figure 2:

5. Remove ONLY the thirteen 10 mm bolts (shown in Figure 2) holding the control valve assembly to the transaxle. Remove the control valve assembly.

NOTE:
Be careful not to drop the manual valve shaft, the servo release accumulator return spring or the lip seals. Also be careful not to damage the control valve assembly sealing gasket.

6. Inspect the control valve strainer for debris. Remove and clean strainer as needed.

Figure 2:

7. Remove the solenoid valve assembly from the control valve assembly (see Figure 3).

8. Inspect the new solenoid valve assembly and confirm the 0-ring for each solenoid valve is properly seated in the 0-ring groove. Also confirm there is no damage or cuts on any of the 0-rings. Replace damaged 0-rings (0-ring P/N's: line pressure solenoid 0-ring = 31526-41X08, solenoid valve assembly 0-rings = 31526-41X09).

9. Lubricate each solenoid valve 0-ring with Nissan Matic-D ATF.

10. Install the new solenoid valve assembly onto the control valve assembly, ensuring the line pressure solenoid spring is re-installed (spring P/N: 31742-80X11). Then use an appropriate torque wrench to tighten all mounting bolts to 7 - 9 N.m (61 - 78 in-lbs) (see Figure 3).

IMPORTANT:
The solenoid valve assembly is secured with bolts of varying lengths. Make sure the bolts are re-installed in their original locations (see Figure 3).

Figure 4:

11. Inspect the four lip seals on the transaxle to ensure they are in their original locations and are not damaged or dislodged (see Figure 4). Replace damaged lip seals (lip seal P/N: 31528-31X06).

NOTE:
Damaged or dislodged lip seals will cause improper shifting.

12. Position the control valve assembly on the transaxle ensuring the manual valve shaft correctly engages the manual plate (see Figure 5) and install all mounting bolts in their original locations finger tight (see Figure 6). Then, using an appropriate torque wrench tighten all mounting bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 7 - 9 N.m (61 - 78 in-lbs).

IMPORTANT:
The control valve assembly is secured with bolts of varying lengths. Make sure the bolts are re-installed in their original locations (see Figure 6).

13. Route and install the solenoid valve assembly wire harness as follows:

A. Clean the inside diameter surface of the transaxle hole that houses the harness terminal body.

B. Inspect the harness terminal body 0-ring for damage or cuts. If damaged, replace the 0-ring (0-ring P/N: 31526-31X12).

C. Lubricate the harness terminal body 0-ring with Nissan Matic-D ATF.

D. Route the harness up through the transaxle terminal body hole until the terminal body is fully seated in its mating hole.

14. Re-install the retaining clip to the harness terminal body.

15. Clean the transaxle oil pan and remove all gasket material.

16. Clean the sealing surface on the transaxle case and remove all gasket material.

17. Re-install the oil pan with a new gasket to the transaxle using new mounting bolts. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts using an appropriate torque wrench in a criss-cross pattern to 7 - 9 N.m (61 - 78 in-lbs).

18. Install the transaxle in the vehicle.

19. Check the transaxle ATF level and add Nissan Matic-D ATF as required.
