1998 ALTIMA RATTLE IN REAR ROOF AREA WHILE SUNROOF IS FULLY OPEN

APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1998 Altima (L30) with sunroof

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1998 Altima exhibits a rattle noise in the rear roof area when the sunroof is fully open, the cause may be the rear edge of the sunroof lid assembly contacting the sheet metal of the roof panel. Use the procedure in the bulletin to resolve this incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Headliner Removal

1. Remove the seat belt anchor covers and bolts from the B-pillars. Use a Torx # 50 for the bolts. The bolt, anchor and washers will remain assembled (see Figure 1).

2. Remove the A and B pillar upper finishers (see Figure 2).

3. Remove the sunvisors (see Figure 3).

4. Remove the sunvisor clips as follows:

A. Use a small, nonmarring plastic tool to open the clip door.

B. Push the sunvisor clip assembly upward and back while prying downward on the plastic hook inside.

C. Pull the clip assembly straight out.

5. Remove the assist grips.

6. Remove the interior lamp.

7. Remove the sunroof switch.

8. Move the driver seat all the way to the rear and drop the seat back all the way down.

9. Carefully remove the four clips at the rear of the headliner and carefully remove the headliner from the vehicle through the left rear door. Place the headliner in a safe area to prevent damage.

Sunroof Adjustment

1. With the sunroof fully open, check the gap between the rear of the lid and the roof panel of the vehicle. Make a note of this dimension.

2. Remove the sheet metal brackets that attach to the inner roof rail.

3. Loosen the two front and two rear brackets at the roof rail (see Figure 4).

CAUTION:
Do not loosen the front sunroof brackets.

4. Pull the rear of the sunroof frame downward approximately 5-8 mm.

5. Tighten the rear sunroof brackets.

6. Re-check the gap between the sunroof lid and the roof panel. Verify it is greater than it was in step 1.

7. Close the sunroof and check to make sure the lid is flush with the roof panel (see Figure 5).

8. To adjust the lid, if necessary, remove the side trim, loosen the bolts and move the lid flush with the roof panel before re-tightening the bolts.

Verify and Reassemble

1. Road test the vehicle to verify the rattle is gone.

2. Reassemble the headliner and interior trim.
