Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Operating Characteristics:

PURPOSE
The Wide Open Throttle Position and Closed Throttle Position Switches are built into the Throttle Position Sensor and are not used for engine control. Both switches are used on Automatic Transmission models only as input signals to the A/T Control Unit.

OPERATION
Should the Throttle Sensor malfunction, the Wide Open Throttle Position Switch detects a throttle valve position of greater than 1/2 of full throttle and sends a signal to the A/T Control Unit.

The Closed Throttle Position Switch detects the throttle valve's fully-closed position and sends that signal to the A/T Control Unit.
