Throttle Cable/Linkage: Testing and Inspection

THIS ARTICLE REFLECTS CHANGES MADE BY TSB #94025A, DATED MARCH 15,1994.

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE MAY BE COVERED BY FACTORY RECALL #94V035.

NOTE:
The following Steps must be carefully followed to ensure that cable slack length is available between the bracket at the air cleaner [Bracket "A"] and the engine room rear wall. This slack length will prevent the cable cover from being pulled away from the cable guide during engine movement.

1. Perform the following checks to confirm that the cable has not moved or completely separated from the guide.

^ Ensure that the metal collar is secured properly around the guide and that it is in good condition and is not damaged.

^ Push the cable into the guide. If you feel the cable can be pushed back into the guide, proceed to Step 6.

2. Remove the four (4) cable clamps.

3. Place a tape mark at the end of the cable cover to evaluate any possible movement of the cable cover from the cable guide.

Throttle Cable Test:

Attach a Belt Tension Gauge, Kent-Moore tool P/N J38387, to the cable with a plastic tie strap. Position the tie so that it is pushed up against the cable cover insulator when pulling on the Belt Tension Gauge (Figure 4).

4. Carefully disconnect the cable at the throttle drum end (make a mark to indicate lock nut's initial position). Remove the cable from the retaining clips, leaving the cable attached to the engine room rear wail.

5. Pull the cable with the Belt Tension Gauge such that the Gauge is parallel to the cable. using approximately 5 Kg (11 lb) of force. If the cable cover does NOT move from the cable guide, proceed to Service and Repair.

6. If the cable cover pulls out of the cable guide, replace the throttle cable, P/N 18201-1E5OO. Before connecting the new cable to the throttle drum, it must be modified. See Service and Repair.
