Using the Vehicle On-Board Self Diagnostics
Do not attempt to switch between On-Board Self Diagnosis and CONSULT Diagnosis.NOTE:
On-Board Self Diagnosis uses the same procedure for Single and Dual Air Bag Systems.
A. User Mode: Normal System Operation. The SRS Lamp displays system status to the Driver.
B. Present Diagnosis Mode: Problem code displayed.
C. Initial Diagnosis Mode: Shows problem code that was last indicated during Present Diagnosis Mode.
(*) Initial Diagnosis Mode was eliminated with the introduction of the Electrical Sensor type Air Bag Module.
Each mode is identified by a specific light sequence. The modes are changed by cycling the driver's side door switch in a specific sequence.
USER MODE
The User Mode can display three different codes, Normal Operation, Component Failure, and Air Bag Deployment or SRS Control Module Malfunction.
If the system is operating normally, with no failures, the SRS lamp will come "ON" for approximately seven (7) seconds (Bulb Check), after the ignition switch is turned "ON". It will then go "OFF" and stay "OFF" until the ignition switch is again cycled "OFF" to "ON".
1. User Mode: Normal Operation
2. User Mode: Component Failure (Light Flashing)
SRS lamp continuously flashes "ON" and "OFF" in even second intervals after the 7 second Bulb Check is completed.
3. User Mode: The Air Bag is deployed, part of SRS Control Module is malfunctioning, an open or short in the SRS system harness has occurred. (Light "ON" constant)
SRS Lamp remains "ON" constant past the initial 7 second Bulb Check.
NOTE:
If the SRS Lamp is flashing a different pattern from the 1/2 second "ON", 1/2 second "OFF" flash, or the light is on constant, as is found in # 1 - 3, the system is already in one of the diagnostic modes. Exit Self Diagnosis using the procedure under No Failure is stored in memory for Initial Diagnosis Mode (Self-Diagnosis Result 2.
PRESENT DIAGNOSIS MODE
To access Present Diagnosis Mode use the following procedure:
Turn the ignition switch "ON", then push the driver's door switch "OFF" and "ON" more than 5 times within the 7 second Bulb Check time frame.
Present Diagnosis Mode (Self Diagnosis Result 1) Failed Component
^ The first sequence of flashing lights indicate the mode Identification.
^ The second set of flashes indicate the failed component code (Lamp repeats "ON" for 1 sec. & "OFF" for 1 sec.), refer to the Tables on Component Code ID Single or Dual Air Bag System or in the appropriate Service Manual, to identify the appropriate Trouble Code.
^ The flashing light sequence will continue to repeat itself to identify the mode and then the failed component code.
No Failure Present Diagnosis Mode (Self-Diagnosis Result 1)
^ The SRS Lamp is "OFF" for 2 seconds and then "ON" for 3 seconds to indicate no trouble codes have been stored in Present Mode.
^ Once you are in Present or (*) Initial Mode, you can switch between modes by pressing the driver's side door switch one time.
(*) Initial Diagnosis Mode was eliminated with the introduction of the Electrical Sensor type Air Bag Module.
Initial Diagnosis Mode (Self-Diagnosis Result 2)
To access (*) Initial Diagnosis Mode use the procedure:
(*) Initial Diagnosis Mode was eliminated with the introduction of the Electrical Sensor type Air Bag Module.
After entering Present Mode push the driver's door switch "OFF" and "ON" more than 1 time 7 seconds after ignition switch has been turned "ON" to access Initial Mode.
^ MODE ID SEQUENCE: The first sequence of flashing lights indicate the mode Identification.
^ CODE SEQUENCE: The second set of flashes indicate the failed component code (Lamp repeats "ON" for 1/2 sec. & "OFF" for 1/2 sec.), refer to the table in the appropriate Service Manual for trouble code description.
^ The flashing light sequence will continue to repeat itself to identify the mode and then the failed component code.
No Failure is stored in memory for Initial Diagnosis Mode (Self-Diagnosis Result 2)
^ The SRS Lamp is "OFF" for 2 seconds and then "ON" for 1-1/2 seconds, "OFF" for 1/2 seconds, then "ON" for 1 second to indicate no trouble codes have been stored in Initial Mode. This is a quick series of double flashes "ON" - "OFF" - "ON".
^ Once you are in Present or (*) Initial Mode, you can switch between modes by pressing the driver's side door switch one time.
