EGR Control Solenoid: Description and Operation

Vacuum Control Solenoid:

PURPOSE
The EGR Control Solenoid will either allow vacuum to pass to the EGR-Back Pressure Transducer (EGR-BPT) Valve or vent the vacuum based on signals from the ECM. The EGR Solenoid also functions as the Purge Control Solenoid.

LOCATION
On the Intake Manifold, near the EGR Valve.

OPERATION
The EGR Control Solenoid has two modes; it is either energized by the ECM and vents vacuum or it is de-energized and allows vacuum to pass to the EGR-BPT Valve.
The EGR Control Solenoid is ENERGIZED (vents vacuum) when:
- Engine RPM is less than 800
- Engine RPM is more than 5200
- Engine coolant temperature is below 60° C (140° F)
- Vehicle speed is less than 11 mph (18 km/h)
The EGR Control Solenoid is DE-ENERGIZED (allows vacuum) when:
- Any other condition other than above.
