1987-88 Stanza Exc. 2WD Wagon
Fig. 25 Rack & pinion type power steering gear disassembled. Maxima & Stanza exc. 2WD Wagon (200SX similar):
DISASSEMBLY
Refer to Fig. 25 for power steering gear disassembly, noting the following:
1. Place alignment marks on cylinder assembly and pinion housing for proper alignment during assembly.
2. Remove rack packing and back-up collar using a 20 mm socket and extension bar. Use caution not to damage inner surfaces of cylinder.
3. Thoroughly clean all parts in suitable cleaning solvent and blow dry with compressed air.
4. Discard all O-rings and oil seals upon removal.
INSPECTION
Tie Rod Outer Socket
1. Check ball joint for swinging torque. Swinging torque should be 1.3-26 inch lbs.
2. Check dust cover for excessive cracking, replacing as necessary.
Tie Rod Inner Socket
1. Check inner socket for swinging torque and axial play. Swinging torque should be .9-65 inch lbs. for Maxima and Stanza or .9-.69 inch lbs. for 200SX. On all models, there should be no axial play.
2. If ball stud is worn and play in axial direction is excessive or joint is hard to swing, replace as complete unit.
Boot
1. If boot is excessively cracked, replace it.
Cylinder Tubes & Breather Hoses
1. Check cylinder tubes and breather hoses for scratches or other damage, replacing as necessary.
Steering Gear Component Parts
1. Check component parts for cracking, wear or other damage, replacing steering gear assembly as necessary.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install rack packing on rack assembly. Use caution not to damage packing on rack teeth during installation.
2. Install back-up collar on inner tube, then slide rack assembly into inner tube.
3. Press rack packing into inner tube using suitable tools.
4. Apply suitable grease to rack teeth, then install rack assembly and inner tube assembly into pinion housing.
5. Install cylinder assembly onto pinion housing by aligning matching marks made during disassembly. Use caution not to damage piston teflon ring.
Fig. 22 Torquing cylinder end housing & pinion housing locking nut. 300ZX & 1987-88 Maxima, Stanza exc. 2WD Wagon & 200SX:
6. Torque cylinder locknut with suitable tools as shown in Fig. 22.
7. Install rack oil seal, backup washer and end cover onto cylinder assembly. Torque end cover to 69-80 ft. lbs., then stake into position.
8. Place rack gear in neutral position.
9. Apply suitable grease to seal lip of oil seal, then install new pinion oil seal into pinion housing using suitable tools.
10. Install rear oil seal into rear housing cover using a suitable tool.
11. Wrap suitable tape around pinion splines to prevent damaging oil seal, then install rear housing cover assembly onto pinion.
12. Install pinion assembly onto pinion housing using a suitable tool. Use caution not to damage pinion teflon ring.
13. Install pinion assembly snap ring, then tighten self locking nut using suitable tools.
14. Install spring seat or bushing, retainer, retainer spring, gasket and retainer cover.
15. Adjust pinion rotating torque as follows:
a. Place gear in neutral position, then torque adjusting screw to 43 inch lbs.
b. Loosen adjusting screw, then retorque to .43-1.74 inch lbs.
c. Apply suitable locking compound to base of adjusting screw and locknut, then torque adjusting screw locknut to 7-11 ft. lbs. Ensure adjusting screw does not turn.
d. Move rack over its entire stroke several times, then return to neutral position.
e. Measure pinion rotating torque within a range of ±100° from neutral position. Rotating torque should be 9-11 inch lbs.
f. If pinion rotating torque is not as specified, readjust as required.
16. Apply suitable locking compound to threaded portion of tie rod inner socket, then install inner socket into rack end together with spacer and lock plate, as required. Ensure lock plate ratchet enters groove at end portion of rack.
17. Tighten tie rod inner socket, then bend lock plate at two cutout portions of inner socket. Remove burrs after bending lock plate to prevent damaging boot.
18. On 1987-88 Maxima & Stanza, proceed as follows:
Fig. 7 Adjusting tie rod length. 1987-88 Maxima, Pulsar, Sentra & Stanza exc. 2WD Wagon:
a. Tighten outer socket locknut so tie rod length ``L'' is 7.02 inches on Maxima and Stanza exc. 4WD Wagon or 6.88 inches on Stanza 4WD Wagon and screwed length ``l'' is .98 inch or more on all models, Fig. 7.
Fig. 26 Measuring rack stroke. 1987-88 Maxima, Pulsar, Sentra & Stanza Exc. 2WD Wagon:
b. Measure rack stroke, refer to Fig. 26. Note that dimension l1 is 2.24 inches on Maxima and Stanza exc. 4WD Wagon or 1.87 on Stanza 4WD Wagon and dimension l2 is 2.76 inches on Maxima and Stanza exc. 4WD Wagon or 2.38 on Stanza 4WD Wagon.
19. On all models, apply suitable sealing compound to contact surfaces between boot and cylinder, then install boot and boot clamps. Ensure boot clamps do not interfere with any other parts. Also, use caution not to twist boot.
20. Install cylinder tube.
21. Apply suitable grease to pinion bearing, then coat threads of housing plug with suitable locking compound. Install housing plug and stake in three places.
22. On 1987-88 Maxima and Stanza exc. 4WD Wagon, install rear cover cap with alignment mark 10°-20° clockwise of neutral position.
