SERVICE INFORMATION
If an applied vehicle has the following symptoms:
^ Air bag warning lamp is flashing or steady on.
^ CONSULT II shows the following Diagnostic code:
DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE (SHORT]
Replace the steering wire assembly (spiral cable) and the driver side air bag module if the described symptoms should occur.
Note:
DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE [OPEN] code may be stored if the connectors of the spiral cable are disconnected from the driver air bag module.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the incident.
2. Remove the driver side air bag module and the steering wire assembly (spiral cable).
^ Use special tool P/N J44615 or J42057 (Air Bag Lock Master Key Set) to remove the air bag module if fastened with accessory anti-theft bolts.

3. Disconnect the spiral cable harness connector as follows:
A. Note the position (color) of the harness connector.
B. With a small, flat screwdriver, pry the connector-locking clip to unlock the connector (see Figure 1).
C. Pull both connectors from the steering wire assembly (spiral cable).
Note:
When ordering the new parts:
^ Make note if the vehicle is equipped with ASCD or radio remote control at the steering wheel.
^ See the Parts Information.
4. Install the new driver side air bag module and new steering wire assembly (spiral cable).
^ Refer to the Parts Information for the correct part number.
^ Use new bolts (either anti-theft or hex head) to fasten the driver side air bag module.

5. Connect the air bag harness connector as follows:
A. Make sure the harness locking clip is raised as shown in Figure 2.
B. Position the harness on the driver side air bag module.
^ Be careful to push only on the harness connector until it is fully seated not on the harness locking clip to connect it (see Figure 3).
C. After securing the connector, push down on the locking clip.
^ Then, pull and wiggle the connectors to ensure they are fully connected and locked to the driver air bag module (see Figure 4).
6. Use CONSULT II to clear the DTC codes.
7. Confirm the incident has been resolved.
