SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 2001 Xterra exhibits a "squeak" or "pop" noise in the right rear floor pan, approximately under the right rear seat, the cause may be an evaporative vent line bracket pressing into the floor pan. See Figure 1 for the location of the evaporative line bracket and floor pan.

Use the information in this bulletin to install a protective patch over the evaporative line clamp to resolve this incident, should it occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Place the vehicle safely on a hoist and remove the right rear wheel.

2. Remove the protective cover from the right rear inner fender to allow access to the evaporative line and clamp (see Figure 1A for protective cover location). To remove the plastic clips that hold the protective cover in place, press inward on the center until they release.

3. Using a 10 mm socket and a small ratchet, remove the bolt that holds the front evaporative line bracket to the frame (see Figure 1B).

4. Remove and discard the evaporative line bracket and clip (see Figure 1B).

5. Hand form a protective patch from P/N 76884-1E400 (see the PARTS INFORMATION section for detail) and install around the line clamp as shown in Figure 2.

6. Re-install the protective cover.

7. Remove the bolt from the rear bracket and add three galvanized washers to shim the rear bracket by 4 mm (see Figure 3).

8. Re-install the rear bracket and bolt securely. Make sure that the evaporative line is securely fitted into all plastic clips and brackets.

9. Inspect the floor pan around the bracket. Use a mirror to look for corrosion or other damage to the underside of the floor pan caused by the bracket. Remove the right rear seat cushion and inspect for an upward "dimple" in the sheet metal. Repair as necessary.

A. If there is no perforation or corrosion of the sheet metal, use spray-on undercoat to coat the underside of the floor pan. Proceed to step 10.

B. Inside the vehicle: if the sheet metal under the seat has been perforated by the bracket, use a small hammer to bring the metal back to its original shape and use spray-on undercoat on the underside.

Clean away a portion of the melt sheet around the perforation or upward dent area and apply 3M(TM) Silencer Strip P/N 08585 (or equivalent) as needed to seal the metal. Proceed to step 10 below.

10. Re-install the right rear wheel and torque the nuts to specification.

11. Test drive the vehicle to verify the noise is gone.
