SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 2000 Xterra exhibits paint chipping at the rear of the hood or top of the fender area (see Figure 1), it may have been caused by side-to-side movement of the hood when off-roading or driving on a "washboard" type of surface. If paint damage has occurred, it will most likely be observable on the edges of the hood. If such damage has occurred, use the following service procedure to repair the incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Clean the fender and hood areas shown in Figure 1, above. Inspect the edges of the hood and matching fender areas for paint chipping.

^ If chipping is minor, repair the area using the correct color touch-up paint.

^ If chipping is major, (rust is occurring), repair it using standard paint repair procedures.

2. Clean the inner fender areas shown in Figure 2. Use PPG(TM) DX-330 Wax and Grease Remover (or VOC equivalent).

3. Using a sharp knife, carefully trim the new hood bumpers listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin as shown in Figure 3.

4. Apply a small amount of high-quality cyanoacrylate instant adhesive (Permatex(R) Ultra Gel Bond P/N 82196, 3M(R) P/Ns 08751 or 08155, or equivalent) to the new hood bumper as shown in Figure 5.

CAUTION:
Read adhesive product label fully before using.

5. Install the hood bumper into the areas shown in Figure 6.

NOTE:
Hold the bumpers in place for 60-75 seconds to allow the adhesive to set.

6. Close the hood to push the bumpers firmly into place. Allow the adhesive to set an additional 2 minutes. Open the hood and check the bumper fit.
