RATTLE NOISE AT FRONT BUMPER
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2000 Frontier (D22)
2000 Crew Cab (D22 Crew Cab)
2000 Xterra (WD22)
SERVICE INFORMATION
If an applied vehicle exhibits a rattle noise coming from the front bumper, the cause may be contact between the front bumper and the front fenders. Use the following service procedure to resolve the incident if it occurs.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Road test the vehicle under the conditions described by the customer to confirm the rattle noise exists. Also determine which side (left or right) of the vehicle the noise comes from.
2. Inspect for contact between the front bumper finisher and the fender (see Figure 1) and between the front bumper side bracket mount and the fender (see Figure 2).
A. If contact exists between either of these components, adjust the front bumper to eliminate the contact as outlined in step three.
B. If contact does not exist between either of these components, look for other causes of the rattle noise.
3. Adjust the front bumper as follows:
A. Loosen, but do not remove, the four bolts that secure the front bumper mounting brackets to the vehicle (see Figure 3).
B. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolt that secures the support rod to the front fender/bumper (see Figure 4).
C. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolt that secures the front side bumper to the vehicle side bracket (see Figure 2).
D. Adjust the front bumper until there is no contact between the front bumper finisher and the fender or between the front bumper side mounting brackets and the fender.
NOTE:
If necessary, use shims between the front side bumper mounting point and the vehicle body (see Figure 2) to eliminate contact. Use care when adding shims as this could cause the side of the bumper to move too far to the outside causing poor appearance.
E. Re-tighten all the fasteners that were loosened.
4. Road test the vehicle to make sure the rattle noise is eliminated.
