Rear Combination Lamp Socket Replacement for 1999 Quest and 2000 Frontier
NOTE:
Perform the following procedure to one rear combination lamp assembly at a time.
1. Remove the upper socket from the lamp assembly by turning it 1/8 turn counterclockwise (see Figure 3) and then pulling back.
NOTE:
The color of the original upper socket for the Quest is light brown. The color of the original upper socket for the Frontier is gray.
2. Remove and save the light bulb from the socket (see Figure 4).
CAUTION:
Wrap a cloth or rag around the bulb when removing it. This will protect your hand/fingers if the bulb accidentally breaks.
3. Insert the tip of a small screwdriver between the rubber plug and the wall of the socket (at the wire side of the socket) and carefully pry the rubber plug out of the socket. Then slide the rubber plug back along the wires to expose the terminals (see Figure 5).
4. Remove the wires from the socket as follows:
A. From the bulb side of the socket, insert special tool (Kent-Moore # J-44627) into the rectangular hole closest to the wire terminal and then press down on the locking tab of the terminal (see Figure 6).
NOTE:
The special tool (# J-44627) will be supplied to each Nissan dealer free of charge.
B. Once the locking tab on the wire terminal is depressed (un-locked position), carefully slide the wire out of the socket.
C. Perform steps A and B above to remove the other two wires from the socket.
5. Make sure the locking tab on each terminal is not flattened out. A flattened tab will allow the terminal to come out of the socket later. Bend the tab up slightly if necessary. See Figure 7.
6. Install the three vehicle wires into the new socket as follows:
NOTE:
The color of the new socket for the Quest is light gray. The color of the new socket for the Frontier is green.
A. Hold the new socket so the notch is to your left when viewed from the rear (see Figure 8).
B. Insert the black/white wire into the opening at the bottom of the socket (see Figure 8) until it clicks (locks into place).
C. Insert the green/orange wire into the opening at the upper right corner of the socket (see Figure 8) until it clicks (locks into place).
D. Insert the red/white wire into the opening at the upper left corner of the socket (see Figure 8) until it clicks (locks into place).
E. Lightly pull on the three wires to ensure they are locked into place to prevent them from coming out of the socket later.
7. Press the rubber plug into the socket until it is fully seated (see Figure 9).
8. Inspect the light bulb for damage or broken element(s). Replace the bulb if necessary.
9. Re-install the light bulb in the socket (see Figure 10).
CAUTION:
Wrap a cloth or rag around the bulb when installing it. This will protect your hand/fingers if the bulb accidentally breaks.
10. Insert the socket into the lamp assembly and turn the socket 1/8 turn clockwise to lock it into position (see Figure 10).
11. Re-connect the vehicle harness to the lamp assembly, then re-install the lamp assembly on the vehicle.
