Wind Noise Around Side Door Mirror
Verify:There may be a wind turbulence noise from the side door mirror. The incident usually occurs at highway speeds of 55 MPH and up (always drive safely and observe all traffic laws).
Figure 3:
Incident can be identified by taping over the space between the mirror body and mirror base outer trim (see Figure 3). If the noise stops use the following repair procedure to resolve the incident.
Isolate:
Figures 4a & 4b:
The space between the mirror body and mirror base outer trim creates wind turbulence. This turbulence is directed at or near the door glass. Add seal packing as shown in Figure 4a from the Parts Information table at the end of this bulletin. Figure 4b shows where new holes are to be drilled into the mirror base outside trim for the seal packing.
Poor sealing or mis-positioning of the door mirror to the door can also cause wind turbulence sound. Add foam seals to the mirror base as indicated in the repair below to avoid this occurrence.
Repair:
1. Lower the door window glass 6-7 in. above waist molding (bottom of window opening).
2. Remove door finisher:
a. Remove door pull handle trim piece, arm rest, and power window switch panel.
b. Unplug two power window switch connectors.
c. Remove three 10 mm bolts and unclip/unfasten finisher from door.
3. Remove lower A-pillar area triangular trim piece.
4. Remove the plastic door liner at upper right corner.
5. Inside the door find and unplug the two side door mirror connectors (2-pin and 3-pin type).
6. Remove side door mirror assembly from door (remove three 10 mm bolts from lower A-pillar area).
7. Remove the screw from the bottom side of the side door mirror base.
8. Remove the rubber gasket.
9. Remove seven screws inside the side door mirror assembly to lift the mirror base out.
Figure 5:
10. Drill two 4.2 mm (5/32 in) diameter holes 41 mm (1.6 in) apart into the mirror base outside trim plastic (see Figure 5).
11. Install seal packing listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin onto the mirror base outside trim.
12. Reassemble side door mirror assembly in reverse order of disassembly.
Figure 6:
13. Cut 3 pieces of foam tape (3M Scotchfoam P/N 021200-03320 Tape # 4504 or equivalent) 5 mm (approximately 1/4 in) wide. Apply them to the outer perimeter of the rubber gasket, where the gasket meets the door (see Figure 6).
14. Install side door mirror assembly to door.
15. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.
