SERVICE INFORMATION

Figure 1:

If an applied 1996-98 Pathfinder has a squeak in the rear of the vehicle, the noise may be due to a loose bracket on the left rear parking brake cable (see Figure 1). This may cause wear on the outer casing of the cable.

If this condition exists, it may be intermittent and more easily heard when driving over bumpy roads. You may be able to isolate the noise to the left rear suspension area by bouncing the vehicle up and down.

Use the Service Procedure in this bulletin to remove, inspect and replace the left rear parking brake cable assembly and correct the described condition, if it should occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify the noise exists under the conditions described in this bulletin.

2. Inspect the left rear parking brake cable for signs of bracket looseness or cable wear described in the SERVICE INFORMATION section of this bulletin (see Figure 1). If the condition exists, you should be able to move the cable by hand to confirm.

3. If bracket looseness or casing wear is present, remove the left rear parking brake cable. Use the appropriate service manual procedures located in the BR section under PARKING BRAKE CONTROL/Removal and Installation (1996-97 Pathfinder Service Manual page number BR-28, 1998 Pathfinder Service Manual page number BR-29).

4. Replace the left rear parking brake cable assembly with parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
