MODEL: See below

SUBJECT:

HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF SUPPLEMENTAL
RESTRAINT COMPONENTS

PURPOSE

Some state and/or local regulations define that deployment of airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner assemblies for disposal must be treated as hazardous material. Handling hazardous material in this manner may require special training, certification or licensing under state and/or local regulations.

MMNA recommends that dealership personnel carefully review and follow all state and and/or local regulations and, where necessary, contract with EPA Licensed Hazardous Waste Transportation and Disposal facilities.

MMNA no longer recommends that dealership personnel manually deploy SRS components as a general disposal method unless specifically allowed under state/local regulations. MMNA encourages the use of an EPA Licensed Hazardous Waste Transportation and Disposal contractor.

A good source of basic information is the Ecar Center website (http://www.ecarcenter.org). You may also wish to:

- consult with a hazardous waste disposal/recycling expert

- refer to the hazardous waste or environmental page of your state's website

- search the Internet for information on state and local regulations regarding the deployment, disposal and recycling of SRS components.

MMNA encourages the recycling of SRS components and uses Promontory Airbag Recovery Center (PARC) located in Promontory, Utah for our recycling needs. You may contact them at (800) 667-4079 to discuss specifics of their program and determine if they meet your needs. Contract with them directly if you chose to use their services.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999 and later Mitsubishi vehicles equipped with Supplemental Restraint System.

Current service manuals explain the procedures for deploying airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner assemblies prior to their disposal. When repairs call for an SRS component to be disposed of (component replacement or vehicle scrapping), where necessary, an EPA Licensed Hazardous Waste Transportation and Disposal facility should be contracted by the dealership to ensure proper handling and disposal of SRS components using procedures from the service manual. Dealership technicians should follow these procedures ONLY if allowable under state and/or local regulation.

A service manual revision will be created for existing publications. All future service manuals and applicable technical publications will include cautions advising dealership personnel to review and follow all applicable regulations prior to performing manual SRS deployment or disposal.
