Suspension - Front End Popping/Rattling Noises

No: TSB-12-33-001
DATE: April, 2012
MODEL: See Below

SUBJECT:
FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING NOISE

PURPOSE

Some customers may report noise from the front suspension such as rattling or popping sounds.

Affected vehicles may exhibit a noise caused by contact between the spring coils under certain road conditions.

This TSB provides instructions for installation of a spring insulator to address the condition.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2011 - 2012 Galant up to January production, built prior to the following VINs.

VIN: ES/FE Model: 4A32B3FF8CE016421
SE Model: 4A32B3FF0CE016293

PROCEDURE

1. Attempt to duplicate the customer's concern under the described conditions.

2. Raise the vehicle to take the load off the front springs and remove the front wheels.

Removal of struts from the vehicle is NOT necessary.

Insulators are slit along the inner radius for easy installation.

3. Turn the steering wheel to the right lock.

REPEAT FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE

4. Using a non-residue cleaner, thoroughly
clean the area of the spring where the
insulator will be installed. Refer to the photo.

!! IMPORTANT !! A pressure sensitive
adhesive on the inside surface of the
insulator secures it to the spring. The spring
must be as clean as possible for proper
adhesion.

5. Mark the second coil of the spring 25mm
(1") above the upper end of the spring as
indicated in the photo ("Start of insulator").

6. Beginning at the mark made in step 5, slide
the insulator onto the spring as illustrated.

7. Press firmly on the insulator along the line
of adhesive to bond it to the spring.

8. Reinstall the front wheels and torque to
specification (73 +/- 7 ft-lbs., 98 +/- 10 Nm).

9. Test drive the vehicle again to confirm the repair.
